Xbox Game Pass x Discord Partnership Brings New Tier

Microsoft has very recently adjusted pricing for both Ultimate and PC Game Pass, aligning with Xbox CEO Asha’s earlier comments about the service becoming too expensive for some players. In an effort to bring in more subscribers, both tiers saw a substantial price cut that took effect immediately. Now, it seems that efforts to make Game Pass more accessible doesn’t stop there.

Over the past couple of months, there’s been growing chatter about Microsoft introducing a new basic tier. That talk picked up further when Call of Duty titles were no longer included as day-one launches in the service which led to speculation about a separate tier specifically for those games. Whether it’ll be the same tier or separate, the point is, Xbox Game Pass is expanding beyond its current four tiers which includes Ultimate, PC, Premium, and Essential.

Now, that “basic” tier is starting to come to light thanks to a preview shared by DiscordPreviews on X in connection with the newly revealed Discord-Xbox Game Pass upcoming partnership.

   

According to the leaked preview, this tier features over 50 games including Fallout 4, Stardew Valley, and Grounded. While it sounds similar to the Essential tier, unlike it, this new version only offers 10 hours of cloud gaming per month. Furthermore, Essential is a standalone subscription whereas this new one, as per leak, is part of Discord Nitro.

As for timing, there’s still no official launch window. Only that, Xbox CEO Asha Sahrma teased that players might start spotting “code in the wild” ahead of the announcement.

True enough (and it didn’t take long), Redphx on X shared backend details referencing a new tier called Xbox Game Pass Starter Edition. The data includes the same monthly cloud streaming limits mentioned in the Discord preview, and that it will include both first-party and third-party games.

Interestingly though, there was no mention of Discord in the backend findings which raises questions about how the offering will be structured. So it could end up as a standalone subscription that’s also bundled with Discord Nitro, rather than being exclusive to it.

There’s still some uncertainty around the final form this tier will take but the direction is clear. Microsoft is experimenting with more flexible entry points into Game Pass in a bid to reach more players who want something lighter and more affordable.

   

This isn’t the first time Discord and Xbox have worked together. Back in 2022, Discord voice chat was integrated into Xbox consoles, marking their first major collaboration. Since then, there have been a few smaller tie-ins including a long-running perk where Discord Nitro was offered as part of Game Pass Ultimate before eventually being phased out.
