Nearly half of the games released on Steam this year didn’t even make back the $100 publishing fee — a stark reflection of how saturated the PC gaming market has become.
According to Gamalytic, a platform that estimates game sales and revenue on Steam using a proprietary algorithm, around 40% of all games released in 2025 have failed to recoup their initial $100 submission cost. With nearly 16,000 new titles hitting Steam this year, competition for visibility is fiercer than ever.

The Harsh Reality of Steam’s Oversupply
Since early 2025, almost 16,000 games have been published on Steam — slightly fewer than the 18,500 titles released in 2024. This overwhelming flood of content means that only a small percentage of developers manage to attract significant player attention.
According to Gamalytic’s analysis, about 6,200 games released this year were purchased by just a handful of people — often only two, three, or four players in total. The sheer volume of new releases not only dilutes visibility but also makes marketing and community-building more crucial than ever for independent creators.

Indie Game Revenue: The Gap Widens
Gamalytic’s data paints a sobering picture of income distribution on Steam. An estimated 65.9% of games released in 2025 earned less than $1,000, while the bottom third generated an average of only $37 in total revenue.
On the other end of the spectrum, the top 5% of games exceeded $300,000 in sales. The report estimates total Steam revenue for 2025 at $4.7 billion, yet this figure hides massive inequality. Only 8% of titles surpassed the $100,000 mark, leaving the vast majority struggling to make even modest profits.
Can Indie Developers Still Thrive?
While Gamalytic acknowledges a potential margin of error in its estimates — especially for free-to-play titles or games with external revenue streams like Patreon or crowdfunding — the overall trend remains clear: the indie scene is more uncertain than ever.
According to the platform, 77% of its game-level estimates fall within a 30% margin of error, and 98% within 50%, making its macro-level data extremely reliable. Despite these challenges, some developers are adapting by targeting niche audiences, building strong communities, or experimenting with hybrid funding models. Creativity and persistence seem to be the only paths forward in an overcrowded marketplace.
Conclusion: A Tough Market Demanding Smarter Strategies
Even if the numbers are not absolute, the message is undeniable: the PC gaming market is brutally competitive. Indie studios must now combine innovative design, clever marketing, and community engagement to break through the noise.

There's more and more junk on Steam, so it's getting harder and harder to find good new games among all the junk. I'm using the Ignore button more and more often to hide the junk.
