In the announcement, Starbreeze’s Thomas Lindgren says the new deal will enable faster updates and allow the company to “pursue broader business opportunities for the PAYDAY franchise as a whole.”
The game has struggled to resonate with fans since its launch, and with the game almost two years old, it still only reaches a daily peak of around 600 players, which Starbreeze is looking to address with future updates. Meanwhile, Payday 2, which is 12 years old, gets a daily peak of 25,000 players on Steam.

Starbreeze’s acquisition of the game’s publishing rights suggests the developer is planning content for the FPS. However, while players will hope for faster updates, Lindgren says in the company’s statement that it will help the “franchise as a whole,” suggesting Starbreeze may look at a new entry rather than focus on Payday 3.
It certainly doesn’t mean the end of Plaion’s involvement, however, as Starbreeze says the new deal “lays the groundwork for a long-term partnership between Starbreeze and Plaion on future Payday franchise projects,” hinting further at another entry in the franchise.
