Why Support for Mortal Kombat 1 Is Ending

NetherRealm has announced it has discontinued support for Mortal Kombat 1 as it’s focusing its entire attention on its next game. Players will continue to get “balance adjustments and fixes,” but there will be no “additional DLC characters or story chapters.”

The developer acknowledged fans’ disappointment but stated it needed to “focus” on its next project “in order to make it as great as we possibly can.”

What’s Next for NetherRealm Studios?

Warner Bros. and NetherRealm have not announced the developer’s next title, but rumors suggest it’s going to be Injustice 3, with the studios eager to release another game in the DC fighting franchise.

MK1 has proven to be somewhat of a hit-and-miss with fans, as the game looked to reinvigorate the franchise, and while support for the game ended less than two years after the game’s launch in September 2023, Warner Bros. has stated the franchise will continue.

What It Means for MK1 Players

Mortal Kombat 1 players will continue to get minor patches and fixes, but there will be no additional DLC or major updates.

Earlier this month, NetherRealm released the Mortal Kombat 1: Definitive Edition for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch, and PC, bundling the game with Shang Tsung, two Kombat Packs, the Khaos Reigns DLC, skins, and in-game currency.

Conclusion

NetherRealm Studios has ended support for Mortal Kombat 1 as the developer shifts its focus to its next game, believed to be Injustice 3. Are you disappointed to see the game end? Share your thoughts in the comments.
