The boss fights mentioned earlier require clear roles and coordination, as they can be quite difficult at certain points. Unless you prepare extremely strong gear beforehand, but then it almost becomes too easy. When everything finally comes together, your house is built, and your beds are next to each other, Valheim feels incredibly rewarding and offers over 100 hours of content.

#2: It Takes Two – Together or not at all

As the name suggests, It Takes Two requires two players. You cannot play it alone or in larger groups. The best part is that only one person needs to own the game, and the second player can join for free using the Friends Pass. You both play a couple going through a separation who get shrunk down to toy size. Your goal is to return to normal. In every level, you learn new mechanics that only work together. The story focuses heavily on relationships and cooperation.

The game is best suited for couples, but it also works perfectly for close friends and their bromance. One player’s mistakes always affect both, and the character dialogue is spot on. Communication, which is lacking between the main characters, is extremely important, as puzzles can quickly become frustrating without coordination. There are also regular minigames where you can compete against each other. It Takes Two is one of the most satisfying co op experiences and has won many awards for a reason.

#3: Helldivers 2 – Friendly fire is not a feature, it is reality

Helldivers 2 is perfect for groups of four players. In this chaotic co op shooter with friendly fire, you team up to save the world. Players around the world fight together against the threat, and you play an important role in that effort. You take on challenging missions filled with fast action and constant pressure. Since sessions are divided into missions, the game is perfect even for shorter play sessions. It is also not a problem if one player goes offline.

Team roles are extremely important, which makes the game very rewarding when played with a well coordinated group and delivers a lot of fun.

#4: Baldur’s Gate 3 – Decisions can break friendships

Next up is the Game of the Year 2023 Baldur’s Gate 3. In this game, you dive into the world of Dungeons and Dragons with a party of up to four players. You get deep RPG mechanics combined with a full co op experience. Everyone can do whatever they want, and you do not even have to stay together at all times. Each player can follow their own path, although fighting as a group is usually the best option. You decide how your journey unfolds, who you kill, and what you do with your hard earned gold.

The combat is turn based and, just like in Dungeons and Dragons, relies on tactics and dice rolls. This can lead to frustration if you keep rolling a one. The game is full of moral decisions, which often lead to discussions within the group. Maybe you cannot agree on whether to blast a door open with a fireball or try to charm your way through. So many questions, so many choices, and so many hours of D and D fun with your friends. Baldur’s Gate 3 offers chaos, progression, and a truly unique experience.

#5: R.E.P.O. – Physics chaos in a horror package

Finally, we come to the last game, R.E.P.O. In this game, you and your team enter cursed locations to steal valuable items. It features a horror setting with monsters that want to kill you and destroy your loot. You need a lot of money to extract successfully. The atmosphere constantly shifts between tension and chaos, and the horror aspect is less intense when played in a group. R.E.P.O is perfect for unpredictable sessions. You can use your money to buy upgrades and items in the shop, but be sure your friends will try to steal everything from you, nothing is safe.

The game also features physics that constantly lead to mistakes and mishaps. For example, if you drop a plate, it breaks and becomes worthless. Some objects are too heavy to carry alone, which requires coordination, and if they hit something, their value decreases. Communication is essential for success. With mods, it is even possible to play in larger groups, making everything even more chaotic and more fun. Each level also becomes harder and bigger over time.
