Nintendo and Sony have announced the upcoming The Legend of Zelda film has been delayed until later in 2027. The live-action Zelda movie will now open in theaters on May 7, 2027, weeks after its initial March release date.

The live-action film adaptation of The Legend of Zelda has been delayed by a few weeks. Nintendo and Sony have announced a new release date of May 7, 2027.
Nintendo has not officially revealed why the highly anticipated Zelda movie will now be released later than expected but says it will “take the extra time to make the film as it can be.”
What We Know About the Zelda Movie
Nintendo confirmed a live-action Zelda movie was in the works in November 2027, with Sony Pictures Entertainment taking control of worldwide distribution. Led by Wes Ball (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes), the film is also being produced by legendary video game designer and The Legend of Zelda creator Shigeru Miyamoto.
There is very little known about the movie regarding cast or story, as Nintendo has not disclosed which game the film will potentially follow. However, in November last year, industry insider Daniel “DanielRPK” Richtman revealed in a Patreon post that Nintendo wants the film to be the first in a trilogy.
Why the Delay?
Miyamoto announced the delay on X via Nintendo’s official accounts, stating “This is Miyamoto. For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of The Legend of Zelda to May 7, 2027.”
Without going into further detail, Miyamoto continued to say: “It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be. Thank you for your patience.”

What Fans Can Expect
The Zelda movie will attempt to follow the likes of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Borderlands, and A Minecraft Movie, which have all been massive successes for their franchises – the Mario film being now being the biggest video game film adaptation ever.
While we no nothing about the film’s cast or story, fans will expect a high fantasy adventure featuring Link, Zelda, and Ganondorf. Add an epix musical score, franchise Easter eggs, and the iconic Hyrule setting, and the upcoming Zelda film could smash box office records.
Conclusion
The Legend of Zelda film adaptation has been delayed by Nintendo and Sony until May 7, 2027. Shigeru Miyamoto says the company will take the extra time to make the movie the best it can be.
