Subnautica 2 is completely changing how we survive in the deep. According to the latest developer vlog from Unknown Worlds, the clunky grid-based modules of the past are officially gone.

Design lead Kiel McDonald confirmed a new procedural system. You are no longer locked into rigid, pre-defined shapes when putting together your underwater home.

It is an expressive setup that feels much closer to actual sculpting. Players can tweak window shapes, customize interior lighting, and apply fresh paint jobs to their habitats.

A New Era of Underwater Construction

Historically, base building in this franchise was functional but stiff. You snapped a basic corridor to a multi-purpose room—and called it a day.

This new approach offers ridiculous flexibility. Senior gameplay engineer Milan Singh noted the team is absolutely hyped to see what the community manages to build.

You can do all of this solo, or bring your crew. The developers emphasized that while the four-player co-op is a major focus, playing completely alone is still fully supported.

Co-op Survival and Launch Pricing

As we detailed in our previous article on the multiplayer and crossplay confirmation, this entry lets you seamlessly build shared bases across PC and Xbox.

The studio is aiming for an Early Access launch in 2026. While official pricing isn’t locked, early survival builds historically sit around $29.99.

Expect that premium retail price to jump closer to $49.99 at version 1.0. Getting in early beats paying the full official storefront markup later.

In the meantime, the original Subnautica and Subnautica: Below Zero already dropped on the Nintendo Switch 2 last month on February 17 with free graphical upgrades for existing owners.
