Sony closes PlayStation studio Dark Outlaw Games after one year, as industry layoffs and studio shutdowns continue to rise.

Another studio has entered the black hole as according to multiple reports, Sony has shut down Dark Outlaw Games, the PlayStation studio led by Jason Blundell, best known for his work on Call of Duty Zombies. It’s the latest move in a stretch of closures that continues to reshape the industry.

 

Dark Outlaw Games Closes Its Doors After 1 Year of Ops

At this point, it’s getting harder to keep track of how many studios have shut down, downsized, or gone through layoffs over the past two to three years. No one seems exempt, whether it’s a long-running team or a brand-new studio, whether led by newcomers or industry veterans.

The latest to get the axe is Dark Outlaw Games, a PlayStation studio that was only established in March 2025. After just a year of operations, the studio has now been closed without releasing a single title. Reports suggest the team was still in the early stages of development before the decision was made to pull the plug.

There’s no clear word on what the studio was working on, though speculation points toward a possible mobile project, especially as Sony has been scaling back its push in that space. Sony is still, however, to support previously announced titles like MLB The Show Mobile, Ratchet & Clank: Ranger Rumble, and projects tied to NCSOFT, but nothing beyond that.

The report first surfaced on ResetEra via user J-Soul and was later confirmed by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg. There’s no exact figure on how many employees were affected, and no official statement has been released by Sony explaining the closure.

As it stands, this is just another example of how quickly things are shifting across the industry, and it doesn’t look like that trend is slowing down anytime soon.
