Sony Continues to Pull Support from PS VR2 with the Shutdown of Firewall Ultra

Firewall Ultra, a first-party title for Playstation VR2 is now delisted. Sony announced that the servers will shut down in September 2026.

Firewall Ultra, one of the first-party titles for Playstation VR2, is now delisted from the PS Store and is confirmed to be shutting down in September. This update was sneakily added to a three-year old article which was meant for its launch.

At this point, it’s clear that Sony is slowly pulling the plug on its Playstation VR2. Late last year, they stopped offering titles to PS Plus members as part of the monthly Premium games. It’s not rocket science to know that the company is no longer as dedicated to the platform like it was in 2023.

To be fair, the whole VR scene is probably not in the state the industry had envisioned before. It took off, don’t get me wrong, but then it fell. Actually, it’s still falling. And this is where Sony is probably cutting their losses. But they still have units to sell and a community to support. So maybe that’s why the shutdown for Firewall Ultra was announced the way it did.

Normally, delisting and server shutdown notices are highly visible especially for an online-only game. Out of courtesy, ample time is given to fans to prepare. Although in this case the time is six months, which is standard, the manner of notifying wasn’t.

Instead of a full-pledge announcement in any social media or forum, a three-year old blog that was for the game’s launch was updated. It reads, “Update (March 2026): Online features for Firewall Ultra will be terminated and will no longer be available on September 17, 2026. As you must be online to play this title, this game will no longer be playable starting September 17, 2026 at 10:00am PDT (GMT -7).” The video included in the original article has also been taken out from YouTube. The game is no longer available in the PS Store as well.

These weren’t a surprise though considering that the studio behind it, First Contact Entertainment, shut down in January 2024. So if there’s anything, the surprising thing is how long the game continued after First Contact closed its doors.

Firewall Ultra was released on August 24, 2023 exclusively for the PlayStation VR2.
