Rockstar Games, the studio behind Grand Theft Auto, is once again making headlines—this time not for GTA VI, but for a wave of controversial layoffs tied to alleged union suppression.

A Storm Inside Rockstar Games

Rockstar has confirmed that between 30 and 40 employees in the UK and Canada were recently laid off. The company claims the dismissals targeted individuals who “distributed and discussed confidential information in a public forum,” violating internal policies. A spokesperson told Bloomberg that the move had “no connection to employees’ right to join or form a union.”

Yet, the Independent Workers’ Union of Great Britain (IWGB) paints a very different picture. The union, which represents UK video game workers, called the decision a “blatant and ruthless act of union busting in the history of the games industry.” According to IWGB, all dismissed employees were active in a private Discord server created for collective organization discussions—only accessible to staff and union organizers.

Fear of a GTA VI Uprising

Alex Marshall, president of the IWGB, accused Rockstar of trying to silence organizing efforts. He stated that management fears “employees privately discussing their rights to a fairer workplace and collective voice.” Marshall added that the company “cares more about suppressing unions than addressing the delays in GTA VItargeting the very people making the game.”

Rockstar, however, remains firm about its internal security stance. The topic became highly sensitive after the massive 2022 leak that revealed early GTA VI footage. In 2024, the studio enforced a mandatory five-day office return to curb leaks—a move already criticized by unions at the time.

Tensions Ahead of GTA VI’s Launch

With Grand Theft Auto VI slated for release on November 19, 2026 after the latest delay, anticipation is sky-high. But behind the scenes, the atmosphere seems increasingly strained. Between heavy workloads, internal pressure, and heightened surveillance, Rockstar faces the daunting task of delivering the decade’s most anticipated title while managing a growing labor dispute.

In Conclusion

As GTA VI edges closer to launch, Rockstar finds itself juggling not only creative and technical expectations but also a brewing social crisis. The outcome of this clash between one of gaming’s most powerful studios and a newly empowered workforce could reshape the industry’s labor landscape.
