Remedy Entertainment has announced a change in leadership as longtime CEO Tero Virtala steps down from his role. Virtala had been the company’s CEO since August 2016.
Virtala joined Remedy Entertainment in 2016, guiding the Finnish game studio as it expanded its impressive catalog of titles, such as Control, Quantum Break, and Alan Wake 2.
The company announced Virtala’s departure in an official announcement to investors, in which interim CEO Markus Mäki thanked Virtala for his “good cooperation” throughout his tenure.
Why Virtala Is Stepping Down
While Remedy has officially confirmed the reason for Virtala stepping aside, the announcement comes after a profit warning to investors two weeks ago in which the company revealed its recent title, FBC: Firebreak, had failed to reach internal targets following its launch on June 17.
The decision to part ways is reportedly a mutual one, with Mäki stepping up as interim CEO until the company appoints a permanent one. Board member Henri Österlund is now Chairman, the role Mäki vacates.
FBC: Firebreak Struggles
FBC: Firebreak is Remedy’s first attempt at a multiplayer-focused live-service title following decades of award-winning single-player action games. Unfortunately, its launch in July 2025 was met with disappointment among fans, with the concurrent player count on Steam dropping from 35,314 at launch to a daily peak of just 40, only four months later.
Remedy has not abandoned the co-op FPS, which is a spin-off from the popular Control series, but so far, the updates to improve the game’s performance and gameplay have not done much to bring fans back to the troubled title.

Remedy is yet to announce its permanent CEO, and Virtala has not revealed where he will be heading next. Regardless, Virtala’s legacy will live on in the success of games like Alan Wake 2 and Control.
