PUBG: Final Circle – Developer Reveals Exclusive Details

The world of PUBG will soon be playable on the tabletop. PUBG: The Final Circle combines the familiar battle royale concept with traditional trick-taking games and trading cards. At SPIEL Essen 2026, I had the opportunity to speak personally with Pine from CardMonster about the project. Our conversation covered gameplay, balancing, and concrete future plans.

PUBG: Final Circle
Key Takeaways
  • PUBG: Final Circle is scheduled to launch on Kickstarter in March 2027, with delivery expected in late 2027.
  • The card game supports two to five players; additional team modes and larger lobbies are currently in development.
  • A booster pack will contain 13 cards and is currently planned to cost between $3.99 and $4.99.

How the Battle Royale Works as a Card Game

PUBG: Final Circle is a trading card game. It is a physical trick-taking game designed for two to five players. A match typically lasts between 10 and 20 minutes. Each player takes on a character with unique abilities. However, this trading card game does not always have to be played competitively with optimized decks.

A classic casual game mode can be played with just a single booster pack per person. No preparation or deck building is required. Each booster pack contains 13 cards, one of which is always a character, making it easy to jump straight into the action with any pack.

At the start of a combat encounter, someone plays a card, and all other players must follow suit if they have the corresponding color in their hand. The higher the card value, the easier it is to win, but you also deal less damage. Low-value cards can cause significantly more damage if they win a fight. Once you win a round, you can freely choose which player takes the damage.

But that is not all; two particularly interesting combat mechanics are introduced. The first is the Ambush: if someone plays the exact same card in the exact same color and value as another player, the player who played the card first takes damage. This allows you to inflict damage even if you do not win the actual trick.

Another feature is the Counter. If you cannot follow the suit that was led, you are allowed to play one of the other two colors. This operates on a rock-paper-scissors system: Yellow beats Green, Red beats Yellow, and Green beats Red.

Later in the game, when you build your own 30-card decks, strategic hand management becomes crucial. Pine, for instance, enjoys playing high cards early on so that he can deal massive damage later using low cards and favorable color combinations. Ultimately, everyone must find their own strategy; playing primarily with mid-range cards is also a viable approach.

Kickstarter, Release, and Boosters – The Master Plan

PUBG: Final Circle is currently in the alpha phase. So far, there are only pre-constructed sets and no randomization elements, though those will be added later. A beta production run is scheduled to begin toward the end of 2026.

CardMonster plans to distribute additional test kits to gather community feedback. The Kickstarter campaign is slated for March 2027. Pine expects the final version to be delivered around the end of 2027. He preferred not to state a fixed funding goal, emphasizing instead that securing a large number of backers and making the game accessible to a wide audience is the primary objective.

Two product variants are planned: First, a Battleground Box will be released. This box includes four complete, pre-constructed decks that can be used repeatedly like a board game for up to four players. Visually, this box is designed to look like a PUBG supply crate.

Second, there are the familiar 13-card booster packs, which include a guaranteed rare and potentially even better cards. The first set is expected to feature roughly 24 playable characters and 100 different loot cards.

Additionally, there will be special alternative artworks and a so-called Survivor Rare. However, rare cards do not automatically mean they are more powerful. Their value often depends on their specific utility and deck synergies.

The first set will be based on Erangel. Future sets will be released as Seasons and may explore other maps, themes, or even historical eras. Each Battleground map can feature its own unique effects.

New Modes, 100-Player Tournaments, and Balancing

I also spoke with Pine about the long-term ambitions for CardMonster and PUBG: Final Circle. Pine explained that his team is already working on additional ways to play the game. Many convention attendees requested options for larger player groups or a 2vs2 co-op mode. Both are currently in development or undergoing testing.

For players who want a more competitive experience, a Constructed mode is planned, where each player brings their own 30-card deck. Pine intends to host major events in the future, featuring a 100-player league. To achieve this, 25 tables of four players each will run parallel matches to crown an overall champion in tournament mode.

Alongside this, relaxed community events will be organized where the shared gaming experience takes precedence over winning. These will feature a more casual format played exclusively with random decks, allowing anyone to easily drop in and start playing.

I also had an extensive discussion with Pine about balancing, as in multiplayer games, a single player can easily become the target of everyone else. This can occur especially in tournaments, where the previous winner gets focused.

The team is currently working on several potential solutions. One option would involve catch-up mechanics for players who are repeatedly attacked. The other possibility is restricting the competitive mode entirely to 1vs1 duels.

In the casual mode, however, Pine considers targeted attacks acceptable, noting that players can laugh it off and the short round times ensure eliminated players do not have to wait long for the next game.

PUBG: Final Circle’s Success at SPIEL Essen

At SPIEL in Essen, the largest board game convention in the world, around 300 to 500 players played PUBG: Final Circle every day. By the end of the event on Sunday, at the time of the interview, he estimated reaching around 1,000 to 1,500 playtesters. The team had provided several hundred demo boosters per day, which apparently had to be restocked frequently due to the high volume of interested players.

Pine and his team also received extensive feedback from the players; roughly 400 to 500 visitors rated the game. At the time of his statement, the average rating was approximately 4.6 out of 5 points. Suggestions for improvement primarily focused on readability, card text formatting, and balancing.

Pine previously worked in the video game industry for eight years and views physical games as a way to bring people closer together. Especially in our current era of expanding digital and AI-generated content, he places high value on hand-drawn illustrations and personal social interactions.

Conclusion – PUBG: Final Circle Has Great Potential

PUBG: Final Circle translates the well-known battle royale formula to the tabletop in an engaging way. I particularly appreciate that you do not need to invest heavily in cards or spend hours on deck building; you can start playing immediately with just a single booster pack. At the same time, the varying card values, the Ambush and Counter mechanics, as well as the planned Constructed mode, offer plenty of depth for strategic gameplay.

CardMonster’s future plans also sound highly promising. With new maps, additional game modes, and even potential 100-player tournaments, the team has major ambitions. However, the game is still in its alpha phase, and there are still unresolved questions regarding balancing. Nevertheless, the positive reception at SPIEL Essen demonstrates that the concept is already resonating well.

I find Pine’s approach particularly interesting; he aims to use PUBG: Final Circle not just to develop another competitive trading card game, but primarily to bring people together around a table. Whether this will succeed in the long run remains to be seen, but at the very least, there should be plenty more to learn about the game when the planned Kickstarter campaign launches in March 2027.
