After years of waiting, Pokémon finally evolves again — and Legends: Z-A proves that change can be both bold and beautiful.
Three years after the divisive Scarlet & Violet, Game Freak returns with Pokémon Legends: Z-A, a hybrid release for Nintendo Switch and Switch 2. The studio promises smoother performance, deeper gameplay and a refined open world. But does this new chapter truly modernize the world’s most lucrative gaming franchise?
A New Light Over Lumiose City
Set in a re-imagined Lumiose City— the Kalos capital inspired by Paris — Legends: Z-A transforms the iconic city into a compact yet vertical open world. From its glowing rooftops, players can admire the Prism Tower at any angle. Exploration feels tighter than in Arceus, but more ambitious in design and atmosphere.
The city’s architecture, lighting and detail make it arguably the best-looking Pokémon game ever — especially on Switch 2, where 60 fps and near-instant loading finally give the series a polished feel.
Reinventing Pokémon Battles
Game Freak abandons tradition once again. Battles now unfold in real time, blending action and strategy. Trainers move freely, dodge attacks and trigger abilities with cooldowns instead of turns. Each night, the Z-A Royale Tournament pits players against tougher opponents to unlock new areas and Pokémon.
This new rhythm energizes the experience but might divide fans loyal to classic turn-based gameplay. The return of Mega-Evolutions adds spectacle and tactical depth — crucial to mastering the game’s most intense encounters.

Technical Leap, Design Limits
Visually, Z-A shines on Switch 2 with impressive lighting and stable performance. It’s a far cry from the rough edges of Scarlet & Violet. Yet limitations remain: close-up textures look dated, and the confined battle arenas sometimes hinder movement.
Game Freak still underuses the console’s touchscreen and new Joy-Con cursor mode, showing that its design habits haven’t fully caught up with modern hardware.
Verdict — A Promising Evolution
Pokémon Legends: Z-A isn’t perfect, but it’s the boldest step the series has taken in years. Its real-time battles, refined world and performance gains suggest Game Freak is finally ready to evolve. Despite lingering flaws, Z-A leaves players hopeful — proof that the franchise’s tenth generation could truly redefine what a Pokémon adventure can be.
