Team Ninja just dropped a massive 17-minute look at Nioh 3 ahead of its February launch. New combat styles, open-field exploration, and a confirmed release date for the free demo are driving the hype train off the rails.


Nioh 3: A 17-Minute Deep Dive

The studio released an extended gameplay overview that puts the “action” in Action-RPG. This isn’t just a cinematic trailer; it’s a raw look at the mechanics, enemies, and the sheer scale of the game.

You play a time-jumping ninja-samurai tracking down a treacherous brother who stole the title of Shogun. The narrative demands you travel across history, jumping from the Edo period (1601-1868) all the way back to the Heian era (794-1185).

Your goal is to uncover the truth behind “The Crucible,” a terrifying dimension spewing monsters across Japan. The footage confirms you will visit the Sengoku and Bakumatsu eras as well, purifying areas corrupted by evil.


The Sequel’s Combat: Ninja vs. Samurai

If you played Nioh or Nioh 2, the core loop will feel familiar, but Team Ninja added a significant twist. You can now freely swap between two distinct styles: the agile Ninja and the resilient Samurai.

This system allows you to build a kit tailored to your specific playstyle. You can equip claws, fists, and scythes for speed, or switch to odachis and katanas for heavy hits.

The extended footage showcased a boss fight against a massive samurai in red armor. The player defeats the enemy and purifies the zone, highlighting how the “Crucible” mechanic works in real-time.

Multiplayer returns, which is good news. The video revealed new enemy types, including Ice and Fire Yokai and monstrous chimeras that will likely require team coordination to take down efficiently.


Nioh 3 Map Exploration

Nioh 3 moves away from strict corridors. The game introduces an “open field” concept. It’s not a traditional open world, but it offers far more freedom than previous entries.

If a boss destroys you, you can turn around, explore a different path, and grind levels before trying again. It feels like a smart blend of Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty and Rise of the Ronin.

The new snowy mountain settlement shown in the video demonstrates this verticality. Players used ninja skills to traverse rough terrain and ambush guards instantly.

Demo Release Date

You don’t have to wait until launch day to test these changes. A free Nioh 3 demo hits the PlayStation Store on Thursday, January 29.

Producer Fumihiko Yasuda confirmed a massive detail for undecided players: your progress carries over to the full game. You can start your build, grind early levels, and keep everything when the full title launches on February 6 for PC and PS5.


Verdict: Is Nioh 3 The Evolution the Series Needed?

Team Ninja seems to have taken the best parts of their recent titles and fused them into Nioh 3. The ability to switch styles and the new open-field approach fixes the repetitive nature of previous mission structures.
