Paramount Confirms a New Sonic Movie for 2028, and It’s Likely Not Sonic 5
Since moving to Paramount, the fastest hedgehog seems to be living the good life. The proof: a fifth film in the Sonic Universe will hit theaters on December 22, 2028.
And if we’re not talking about Sonic the Hedgehog directly, but rather its extended universe, it’s because there’s a good chance it will be a spin-off.
A mysterious “Event Film” according to Variety
The information comes directly from the journalists at Variety, who unfortunately clarify that details about this “Sonic Universe Event Film” are still being kept secret for now. But as we mentioned earlier, this name suggests it will be a feature film somewhat separate from the other four films.
The question, therefore, is whether it will be a completely new feature film, or if its script will be based on one of the franchise’s video games, and most importantly, which one.
Shadow or a new spin-off?
Indeed, if you’ve followed the basic trilogy, you already know that Sonic the Hedgehog 4 should mark the arrival of Amy Rose and Metal Sonic into Jeff Fowler’s cinematic universe. Shadow’s return for this film, however, would be quite surprising. This makes us think he could be an ideal candidate for the lead role in the fifth film. After all, the character is in good standing with the fans, a very nice Sonic X Shadow Generations was released last year, and hey, Knuckles himself starred in a mini-series, so it would only be fair.
But obviously, these are just suppositions. After all, nothing would stop Paramount from offering an episode focused on racing like Sonic Racing Crossworlds, on the Chaotix team from Sonic Heroes for an investigation, or even, let’s be crazy, on the poor, often-forgotten Blaze from Sonic Rush. Here, and on a purely personal note, we’re praying very hard for a romantic comedy starring Idris Elba and Keanu Reeves, but shh.
Box office: A success that doesn’t wane
In any case, it’s a true consecration for the Sega mascot. We remember his awful first design which didn’t bode well, and yet the redemption has been up to par, culminating in a third film that brushed the $500 million mark at the box office. That’s nearly $100 million more than its predecessor, which itself surpassed the first film by $100 million. In short, it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say that even without mentioning the mysterious future spin-off, we are already eagerly awaiting the numbers for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, scheduled for March 19, 2027. On the way to 600 million? Anything is possible.
