It is officially the end of an era for PC builders and tech enthusiasts. Micron Technology has announced it is shutting down its consumer brand, Crucial, to shift its entire focus toward the booming AI and enterprise sectors. After 29 years of being a staple in budget-friendly and high-performance builds, the consumer line is being retired.
A Shocking Departure for PC Builders
For nearly three decades, the Crucial brand has been synonymous with reliability. If you have built a gaming rig or upgraded a laptop, chances are high that you have used their memory or storage solutions. Unfortunately, Micron has decided to exit this space completely.
The company confirmed that it will stop selling Crucial consumer-branded products to retailers and e-tailers worldwide. This covers their entire consumer portfolio, including their popular SSDs and RAM kits.
However, the products won’t disappear from shelves immediately. Micron plans to continue shipments through the consumer channel until the end of fiscal Q2, which falls in February 2026.
Why is Micron Killing Crucial?
The decision comes down to one massive industry shift: Artificial Intelligence. As demand for data center memory skyrockets, Micron is pivoting its resources to chase the higher margins in the enterprise sector.
Sumit Sadana, Micron’s EVP and Chief Business Officer, described the move as a “difficult decision.” He explained that exiting the consumer business allows them to improve supply and support for strategic customers in faster-growing segments.
Essentially, the explosion of the “data economy” means Micron sees more value in powering AI servers than in selling individual drives to gamers. It is a logical business move, but it leaves a significant void in the DIY PC market.
Today, Micron shared some news that comes with a heavy heart: we’ve made the difficult decision to wind down the Crucial consumer business. This means that sales of Crucial-branded products through retailers, e-tailers, and distributors worldwide will gradually come to an end.… pic.twitter.com/KlW6B40BHO

What Happens to Your Warranty?
This is the biggest question for current owners. If you recently bought a T700 SSD or a Pro RAM kit, do not panic. Micron has confirmed they are not abandoning existing customers.
The company stated they will continue to provide warranty service and support for Crucial products. They are working closely with partners to ensure a smooth transition over the next year.
Here is what remains unchanged:
- Warranties: Existing warranties will be honored.
- Enterprise: Micron-branded enterprise products will still be sold commercially.
- Staff: Micron intends to redeploy affected team members to other open positions within the company.
The End of a 29-Year Legacy
It is rare to see such a dominant player leave the consumer field entirely. Crucial was often the “go-to” recommendation for price-to-performance value, and their exit will likely shake up the market dynamics for storage and memory.
While Micron’s focus on the intelligent edge and AI compute is understandable, the loss of Crucial is a blow to the enthusiast community. We have until February 2026 to grab the last of their hardware.
In Conclusion
This move marks a definitive shift in the hardware industry, proving just how much AI is reshaping corporate priorities. As we say goodbye to Crucial, other brands like Samsung, Western Digital, and Corsair will likely fight to fill the gap but uncertainty remains.
