Lightyear Frontier (LF) is the life sim adventure developed by the Swedish team of Frame Break. Co-developed by Amplifier Studios after acquiring the team in 2021. It was first announced in August 2021 with a trailer reveal. A farming sim that takes you to the edges of the universe, on a new planet to explore and develop.

With a solid farming system aboard your trusty mech, discovering alien life forms. Plus the mysteries that the planet hides, with the option to play solo or in coop. The game launched in Early Access on March 19, 2024 on Steam, Xbox Series X/S, and Game Pass, receiving strong success. Lightyear Frontier refreshes with the Shifting Gears update

After over a year of development, the Frame Break team announces the new update for Lightyear Frontier. With the summer update coming soon for the futuristic farming sim, titled Shifting Gears. A massive update that promises to revolutionize the experience with a June 6, 2025 launch.

Bringing numerous additions and tweaks to the experience, elevating it to the promised standard. With an even larger game world, new resources to discover, and mech customizations. It also introduces some varieties to the world like tornadoes.

 

Lightyear Frontier: What’s new in Shifting Gears

With Shifting Gears, we’re getting a full overhaul of the LF gameplay experience. An update that touches various aspects of the life sim experience, developed over the past 6 months based on player feedback. Offering:

  • World & Story: A bigger game world, with new recipes, resources, and buildings. The story has been revamped and expanded, with various neighbors, each with their own storylines and quests.
  • Exo-Farming & Mech: Loads of new options for the mech, making farming more efficient. Also introducing the Delivery Cannon for sending items further. Not to mention the aesthetic mech customizations.
  • Farm & Farming: A ton of new additions and improvements like automatic watering drones. Plus fertilizer from our animals. With the new Farm Center Barrier for safe farming and some buffs.

The team has also provided more info on the official site, along with a quick FAQ about legacy saves. They’ll also disable certain options, like farm damage. And don’t forget the Pre-Patch Event running from May 28 to June 3, rewarding players with a blueprint for a spaceship and a mech skin.
