Krafton Offers Voluntary Resignation Package to Employees Following ‘AI First’ Announcement

Krafton launches a Voluntary Resignation Package to all local employees in Korea as it focuses on AI. Severance packages depend on tenure.

Krafton has found itself in the headlines again with the launch of a Voluntary Resignation Package. The company states that all employees have full autonomy in deciding whether to take it or stay as they transition into the “AI first” policy.

Just a few weeks ago, Krafton announced its “AI first” policy which didn’t surprise many but also filled many people, especially those connected to it, with dread. Like we’ve seen with a few companies this year, that meant layoffs.

However, a Krafton representative stated that this is not a layoff, but a support to employees in “designing their growth direction and embarking on new challenges both inside and outside the company amid the era of AI transformation.” Basically, a way out especially for those who do not see themselves moving in the same direction.

According to reports, the program which was announced internally offers employees a severance package based on how long they’ve been with the company. For example, 6 months salary for employees under one year of service and up to 36 months salary for those over 11 years. It’s a pretty hefty buyout, but then again, it’s the way into uncertainty. In this day and age, having no job is a pretty scary thought and a dark reality many people face in the “era of AI.” On top of that, a freeze hire is also in place.

Krafton is a huge publisher and is connected with many game developers. And so of course, this created a wave of panic. Fortunately some devs, including those of Subnautica, clarified that the program is only for domestic employees in Korea. They also used the opportunity to reiterate that they are not using generative AI to develop games.

   

The program is open to all domestic employees in Korea starting November 12, the same day it was announced. This comes after Krafton had a record quarterly profit of over $700M and the “pledge” of investing $70M into a GPU cluster which will serve as the foundation to its agentic AI.
