Is Final Fantasy becoming a ‘boomer’ relic for Square Enix?

Final Fantasy 14 director Naoki “Yoshi-P” Yoshida has issued a terrifying reality to developer and publisher Square Enix, stating that Final Fantasy is at risk of becoming a “boomer” relic unless the company solves its crippling, long development cycles.

For decades, Final Fantasy was the undisputed heartbeat of the RPG genre, defined by a rapid-fire release cadence that kept it at the center of the cultural conversation.

However, long development cycles have now become standard, stretching between five to seven years, meaning a ten-year-old who missed the launch of Final Fantasy XV is nearly an adult by the time the next mainline entry hits shelves.

In a recent interview talking about the upcoming Dissidia Duellem Final Fantasy, producer and FF14 director Naoki Yoshida admitted that the series is struggling to connect with younger gamers who favor fast-paced, online experiences over decade-long waits for a single-player epic.

The Development Hell Alienating New Players

The seven-year void between Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy XVI did more than just test the patience of die-hard fans, it erased the series from the zeitgeist for an entire generation.

Teenagers today have no “active” memory of the series’ peak. Unlike the 90s, when masterpieces arrived almost annually, the current release cadence creates a massive cultural vacuum.

If you aren’t shipping games, you aren’t building memories. For a 15-year-old, a five-year dev cycle is a third of their entire life. By the time the next “must-play” RPG hits, they’ve already moved on to faster-moving ecosystems.

Prestige vs. Pace: The Cost of Perfection

Square Enix has recently pivoted toward high-octane action to tempt younger players to their core franchises, but the standard, high-cost launch prices remain a massive hurdle.

A price of $69.99 is a tough sell for a demographic used to free-to-play giants or rapid-fire indie hits. While the price of new games will likely increase going forward, there are alternative ways to get the hot new RPG.

Can Square Enix Pivot in Time?

Whether Square Enix can actually speed up the assembly line without sacrificing quality remains the billion-dollar question. That is if their fans have not already lost patience.
