GOG is entering a massive new chapter. Michał Kiciński, the co-founder of CD PROJEKT and the GOG platform itself, has acquired 100% of the company’s shares. The deal is valued at 90.7 million PLN (approximately €21.4 million / $22.4 million).
This acquisition marks a major shift nearly 14 years after Kiciński originally stepped away from the CD PROJEKT group. The move separates the store operations from the development giant, signaling a return to the platform’s roots.

GOG’s Independent Era
According to a press statement from GOG, this buyout is a calculated move to protect and strengthen the platform’s founding philosophy. Since 2007, GOG has operated on a simple promise: games should be accessible, free of technical shackles, and truly owned by the player.
In a PC market dominated by mandatory launchers and closed ecosystems, Kiciński views this vision as critical. He states that “GOG stands for freedom, independence, and genuine control.”
The platform’s leadership believes many essential games risk disappearing due to complex rights issues or compatibility failures. Kiciński wants to ensure that “I’m playing today” always wins over “I’ll play someday.”

Michał Kiciński, co-founder of CD PROJEKT and GOG, has acquired GOG from CD PROJEKT.
The mission stays the same: Make Games Live Forever.
Going back to our roots allows us to double down on what we do best: reviving classics, giving you a library…
Why CD PROJEKT Sold GOG
For CD PROJEKT, this divestment aligns with a long-term strategy to focus strictly on game development. The studio aims to pour its resources into creating high-quality RPGs within its flagship universes, The Witcher and Cyberpunk.
Despite the separation, the relationship remains strong. GOG gains autonomy to pursue its mission, but CD PROJEKT RED titles will continue to launch on the platform.
What changes for you?
- DRM-Free: Remains the core pillar.
- Offline Installers: Still available for total ownership.
- GOG Galaxy: Remains an optional client, never mandatory.
- Data Privacy: User data stays exclusively with GOG.
The platform reports financial stability and an encouraging year, with plans to expand preservation efforts in 2026 and 2027.
Verdict: Is GOG Safe for Your Library?
This acquisition is a win for consumer rights. With the original co-founder taking the helm, the threat of GOG drifting toward aggressive corporate monetization or mandatory DRM seems lower than ever.
The platform is doubling down on preservation, making it a safe harbor for digital collectors. If you value owning your games forever rather than renting a license, GOG remains the industry leader.
Do you prefer buying games on GOG to own them DRM-free, or do you stick to Steam for the convenience?
