Firaxis continues its steady technical rehabilitation of Sid Meier’s Civilization 7 following a rocky launch. The initial release was defined by user interface criticisms and divisive core design changes.
Following the massive Test of Time update, the development team is prepared to deploy another major suite of changes. These additions are aimed at restoring classic features and expanding strategic depth.
- Launch Window: Civilization 7 update 1.4.1 and the paid Brush & Blade DLC officially deploy during the week of June 22, 2026.
- Free Content additions: The base game update introduces local hotseat multiplayer, advanced Voronoi-generated Archipelago maps, and persistent Government Traditions.
- Premium Expansion: Part One of the Brush & Blade Collection adds leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi alongside Heian Japan and Sengoku Japan civilizations.
What is Changing in the Civilization 7 Update 1.4.1?
The Civilization 7 update 1.4.1 introduces the highly requested hotseat multiplayer mode for local play. It also adds a completely revamped Archipelago map type using advanced Voronoi generation, alongside overhauled government systems.
Launching the week of June 22, 2026, the free update arrives alongside the paid Brush & Blade DLC collection. According to the official Steam update post, the introduction of hotseat multiplayer allows friends to compete locally on a single system. Players can now achieve this by simply passing a controller or keyboard.
This addresses a major feature omission heavily noted by the community during the initial launch window.
The update also reengineers the map pool. The new Archipelago map utilizes advanced randomized Voronoi generation to create more unpredictable landmasses. The older iteration remains accessible under the name Archipelago Hemispheres.

Overhauled Progression and Persistent Traditions
Beyond map generation and multiplayer functionality, Firaxis is targeting core gameplay loops. Systems governing Governments, Happiness, and Celebrations are receiving total overhauls to provide distinct tactical choices.
Players can experience updated Happiness tiers and revised celebration mechanics.
Most notably, the update introduces Government Traditions that persist across different historical Ages. This allows choices made early in a match to leave a permanent mechanical footprint on a civilization’s progression.
Launching with the free Update 1.4.1 is the first half of the new Brush & Blade Collection.

Inside the Paid Brush & Blade DLC Collection
Launching alongside the free mechanical update is the first installment of the premium Brush & Blade Collection. This downloadable content focuses on the history of East Asia, splitting its release into two distinct seasonal parts.
Part One includes the legendary leader Toyotomi Hideyoshi, alongside two unique civilizations: Heian Japan and Sengoku Japan. The pack also adds four constructible Wonders and various profile customization assets.
Firaxis confirmed that purchasing the collection grants immediate access to Part One. This purchase also automatically secures Part Two when it launches later this summer.
The second half of the DLC will introduce Korean history via admiral Yi Sun-sin, alongside the Goryeo and Joseon civilizations.
