The Irem Collection Volume 3 contains three fantastical shoot ’em up games: Mr. Heli, Mystic Riders, and Dragon Breed, remastered for modern systems with optional controller enhancements, including rapid-fire button assignment and customizable control layouts, Quick save/load, and built-in rewind to keep the action flowing.

• Mr. Heli – First released in Japanese arcades in 1987, Mr. Heli, the quirky, legged chopper with a whole lot of firepower! Pilot your way through inventive stages, mining crystals, earning cash, and upgrading your arsenal to keep those rotor blades spinning!
• Mystic Riders – First released in Japanese arcades in 1992, Mystic Riders is a fantasy shooter where you ride broomsticks and battle giant sky turtles, flaming demons, and other mythical creatures.
• Dragon Breed – First released in Japanese arcades in 1989, throwing you into a biomechanical nightmare! Ride into battle on the mighty dragon Bahamoot, who can shield you from danger and scorch everything in your path.

Irem Collection Volume 3 delivers a fun trio of lesser-known shooters with solid emulation, but the lack of any historical extras feels like a missed opportunity. For all of its retro charms, Volume 3 doesn’t adequately honor its meager collection of material.

Overall, this is yet another great Irem Collection, and much like the first and second releases, this third instalment is excellent. However, its star attraction is the adorable Mr. Heli, which is still just as fun to play as when I played it in the arcades as a kid.

Irem Collection Volume 3, like previous releases from Irem and Tozai Games, is a must-have for retro arcade enthusiasts and shoot ‘em up aficionados. There isn’t a single one of these that isn’t worth a buy, honestly, but this one in particular is an amazing set of games that would only get better if there were more of them. The only downside to it is exactly that – only four games to play, but what a great set. You can play it once it’s out on July 1st. Can’t wait to see what else there is to play on future entries.
