Bramble The Mountain King is a cinematic horror adventure inspired by Nordic fables. The story follows Olle, a boy searching for his sister that was kidnapped by a troll in a dangerous world with a suspenseful and dark atmosphere. It’s a short experience that doesn’t overstay it’s welcome and filled with creepy moments and tense enemy encounters with the occasional boss to defeat. Reminds me a bit of Inside and Little Nightmares which are games I really enjoyed so I definitely recommend this title.
Bramble: The Mountain King is a third person linear adventure by the Sweedish small team of Dimfrost Studio, that feature lots of elements and creatures from the nordic fables, famous for their much darker tone.
The game will be mostly narrated as a fable with a very story book like approach, and will focus on Olle a young boy who wake up in the middle of the night and discover that his sister, who despite being told not to, stumbled on the forest and gets kidnapped by a troll. It’s thus to Olle to find her sister and bring her back home. He’ll go through a world filled with creatures, either friendly or even dangerous, we’ll have to navigate thus with several platforming sections, hide from danger and solve puzzle along the way, often culminating with a boss fight at the end of each zone/chapter.
Olle’s only weapon and also his only source of light is the Spark of Courage. Visually very well crafted, a lot of effort has been put for the visual presentation of the areas, altough a bit lacking on characters models, as well as the story telling, with the narrator doing an amazing job at describing both the story and feeling of the characters, with plenty of cutscenes and also presences of storybooks, in which she (the narrator) will often recount tales of the soon to be fought bosses, presenting them beforehand but also giving us interesting backgrounds on these creepy creatures.
Boss fights revolves mostly in surviving the enemy attacks and wait for the right moment to attack. As far as the overall gameplay though, there’s nothing that stands out too much and in fact it’s mostly a simple enough approach, to not discourage players in retrying too much in order to progress(there are even checkpoints during bosses phases), and instead focus on the story.
Overall a pleasant title, that points everything on the story and atmosphere, at times creepy and quite gory, for a rather interesting but short experience, spanning about 5 hours at best, with very little incentive to replay it more than once other than missing on some achievement. The pricing is definitely too high at 29,99€, but it’s already available around 16€on keyshops, making it a compelling choice at this price point.
