Patrice Désilets has been trying to make 1666: Amsterdam since 2011. After a lengthy legal battle with Ubisoft, and initially to be published under Microsoft before cut fundings with the launch of Panache Digital Games, the historical action-adventure title is finally moving toward a full release.

What is the story of 1666: Amsterdam?
1666: Amsterdam is a third-person action-adventure game that follows Noa, a member of the ancient Zandaris tribe. She serves as a Collector, tasked with hunting down corrupted magic users called the Originals to reclaim their power and restore balance to the world alongside an animal companion.
This lore was expanded upon in a recent gameplay feature narrated by Panache Digital Games co-founder Jean-François Boivin. The Zandaris tribe originally bestowed magical energy upon individuals deemed worthy.
Unfortunately, this magic quickly corrupted those who wielded it. The newly released details explain that the tribe must now cycle through chosen women, like Noa, to hunt the corrupted Originals and reclaim the lost magic.
Why is 1666: Amsterdam set across multiple games?
Director Patrice Désilets intends for 1666 to be an anthology series rather than a standalone game. While the first entry focuses on Amsterdam, future titles will explore different global locations while remaining anchored exclusively to the specific events of the year 1666.
During a recent interview with GameFile, Désilets explained the numerical superstition that drives the project. He noted that the numbers three, six, and nine are foundational to the game’s design and identity.
This vision mirrors the global mapping structure seen in his earlier work on Assassin’s Creed. By keeping the chronological year identical, the narrative department can explore how the “year of the devil” impacted various cultures simultaneously.

Developer Insights and Early Access Preparation
Panache Digital Games is actively taking community feedback into account ahead of the game’s broader launch. Narrative Director Philippe Debay stated that the story is deeply integrated with level design, ensuring that gameplay systems directly contribute to the narrative.
Players who experienced the prologue have already begun assisting the development team. Despite lacking a formal bug reporting tool in the demo, players utilized the studio’s Discord to submit detailed crash reports and optimization feedback.
The studio confirmed that an official bug reporting system will be implemented when the game enters Early Access on PC later this year. The playable prologue remains available on Steam and the Epic Games Store.
