The Microsoft mass layoff saga continues. First the announcement of the layoffs, then the magnitude of the actual layoff, then the Xbox AI roundtable invite, and now, well, the advice given to affected employees to use the very reason they lost their jobs.

While many are already irked from the Xbox AI roundtable invite, another tone-deaf move has put the company in bad PR again. Well this time, it’s not the company itself who did the damage but a particular executive producer in the company.

In a now-deleted LinkedIn post by Matt Trunbull, he suggested that people use “LLM AI tools (like ChatGPT or Copilot)” to deal with the stress and emotions of getting laid off. He then provided some prompt ideas people can use to get help with basically getting another job or help with “emotional clarity & confidence”.

For obvious reasons, people who just lost their jobs in Microsoft and those who have sympathy and compassion didn’t sit well with his post. Mainly because AI is the very reason why there was internal restructuring causing the massive loss of jobs. The worst part is, he posted it just a couple of days after the layoffs. Call it as it is, a bit insensitive.

While some are angered by it, with some even saying the post itself sounded AI (or heartless), some also pointed out that the advice itself wasn’t bad. In fact, many thought the prompts he shared were helpful and practical. Tools like ChatGPT really can support people with resumes and job applications. And the reality of it now is, in a world that won’t wait for anyone, keeping your eyes forward could be the only way to survive. In any industry, that is.

Still, even those who supported the message felt that the timing was way off. A little pause might have made the difference between helpful and hurtful.
