Insider reports indicate the next major Age of Empires title is scrapping its legacy tech for a complete engine overhaul. The goal? To fix the franchise’s technical “bones” once and for all.

Jez Corden from Windows Central dropped a significant bit of news on the XboxTwo podcast regarding the next chapter in the Age of Empires saga. According to his sources, World’s Edge is moving away from the proprietary tools used in previous entries.
Instead of iterating on existing tech, the studio is reportedly shifting development entirely to Unreal Engine 5. This move signals a massive reset in how the game is built, prioritizing long-term flexibility over a quick sequel release.
