- Toys for Bob named the game Spyro: A Realm Beyond instead of Spyro 4 to welcome new players without requiring them to play older titles.
- The game features a completely rebuilt movement system, replacing restricted gliding with true, continuous flight across open environments.
- The title is slated for a Spring 2027 release on PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
Why isn’t the new game called Spyro 4?
Developer Toys for Bob deliberately avoided the title Spyro 4 to prevent alienating newcomers who might feel they need to play the original PlayStation trilogy first. The studio wants Spyro: A Realm Beyond to act as a completely fresh, welcoming entry point for the franchise without requiring historical homework.
Speaking with Kinda Funny, associate creative director Lou Studdert clarified the naming strategy. The lengthy gap since the last original entry meant the studio had to prioritize accessibility over strict continuity math.
Unlike Crash Bandicoot 4: It’s About Time, which actively resurrected a classic gameplay foundation, Spyro’s tangled history across early reboots and the Skylanders era left no clean timeline to follow.
Studio head Paul Yan noted that dropping the number grants the newly independent studio the creative freedom to honor the original tone while introducing entirely new mechanics.
Redefining Exploration with True Dragon Flight
The decision to reboot the naming convention runs parallel to a massive mechanical overhaul. Toys for Bob is utilizing its independence to rebuild Spyro’s movement systems from the ground up, prioritizing fluid aerial control.
The most prominent addition is sustained, unrestricted flight. Earlier titles limited players to basic glides or isolated racing challenges, but the upcoming release integrates true flight into standard exploration.
Studdert confirmed that players can transition into flight at any moment. The system requires active input and decision-making. Players can now utilize environmental features like updrafts from campfires to gain altitude, maintain momentum, and cross massive vertical spaces.

Which platforms will Spyro: A Realm Beyond release on?
Spyro: A Realm Beyond is officially scheduled to launch in Spring 2027 across current hardware generations. The confirmed platform lineup includes the PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC and the Nintendo Switch 2 system.
This broad multiplatform strategy reflects the new publishing agreement established after Toys for Bob split from its previous parent company. Operating as an independent studio, they partnered directly with Xbox to ensure the title reaches the widest possible audience. The inclusion of the Nintendo Switch 2 highlights an aggressive launch strategy that ignores heavy exclusivity restrictions.
The transition to independent development has allowed Toys for Bob to restructure the foundational elements of one of gaming’s most recognizable platformers. By discarding the numbered sequel format, the studio is positioning the upcoming release as a modern baseline rather than a nostalgic retrospective.
The return of original voice actor Tom Kenny provides an anchor to the classic era, while the expanded movement systems aim to modernize the formula for a 2027 market.
