Sword Sage Awakening brings Chinese sci fi mythology to PC in 2027

Publisher 4Divinity and developer Sword Panda Limited have revealed a new story trailer for Sword Sage: Awakening, an upcoming Chinese mythology-inspired action RPG. Recent hands-on previews also shed light on the game’s radical departure from traditional combat mechanics.

What Is Sword Sage: Awakening?

Sword Sage: Awakening is an upcoming action RPG on Steam developed by Sword Panda and published by 4Divinity. It follows San Niang, a novice Yaoguai Vanquisher, as she utilizes martial arts and advanced mechanical technology to survive a world shattered by forbidden celestial books.

The newly released story trailer highlights the dense lore of Jiannandao. A millennium ago, the drunken Supreme White Gibbon Sage leaked divine texts to humanity. This devastating mistake caused endless natural disasters and monstrous infestations across the land.

Humanity adapted by forging sci-fi mechanical wonders to fight back. Players will use the secret sword techniques of the Yuangong Sect alongside Taoist spells to defeat demonic entities known as Yaoguai.

As shared by IGN in their preview, developer Sword Panda completely subverts genre expectations by removing the dedicated dodge-roll button. Instead, the combat system draws heavy inspiration from Bruce Lee’s Jeet Kune Do philosophy, focusing on the way of the intercepting fist.

Players must intercept attacks right as they happen using the “Evade Cyan, Strike Red” technique. By holding block and flicking the thumbstick to match the enemy’s attack angle, players trigger a devastating counter to break enemy postures.

Weapon durability also plays a crucial role in these high-stakes encounters. Repeatedly blocking heavy strikes will shatter your primary blade. When broken, weapons must be passively reforged in San Niang’s back-slung weapon chest while she relies on a secondary sword.

Is Sword Sage: Awakening Too Difficult for Casual Players?

Sword Sage: Awakening features a single baseline difficulty level but implements a dynamic, optional accessibility system. After dying three times in the story, players receive special talismans that can automate the directional evading or countering mechanics, ensuring progression remains achievable.

This system guarantees that the intense combat mechanics do not severely gatekeep players. For those who find the intricate Jeet Kune Do directional parries too demanding, these talismans act as flexible training wheels.

They are entirely optional and can be unequipped from the loadout menu at any time. This allows players to re-engage with the raw combat challenge whenever they feel properly accustomed to enemy attack patterns.

Level Structure, Exploration, and Release Outlook

Despite the innovative combat, fans of FromSoftware’s level design will find the world structure familiar. The environments loop back on themselves with unlockable shortcuts, ladders, and checkpoints manned by tea-serving red pandas who manage your upgrades.

The world of Jiannandao is filled with optional bosses, environmental puzzles, and warring enemy factions that can be exploited for vital crafting resources.

According to the hands-on preview, the main campaign will take approximately 15 hours to complete. With development currently sitting at around 60%, the game is widely expected to launch on Steam sometime in 2027.
