What is Included in the Subnautica 2 Early Access Release?

The Early Access launch delivers a substantial foundational experience, introducing distinct new biomes and the highly requested 4-player cooperative multiplayer.

Players can map the depths, build underwater bases together, and encounter a fresh ecosystem of alien marine life, though the main narrative remains incomplete in this initial build.

Unknown Worlds has completely rebuilt the cooperative experience from the ground up. Unlike unofficial mods for the first game, this native multiplayer integration ensures synchronized weather events and stable base construction.

The current map features several massive biomes. This offers dozens of hours of resource gathering and survival progression before players hit the current content wall.

Why Was Unknown Worlds CEO Ted Gill Ousted Last Summer?

Ted Gill and other senior members were let go by publisher Krafton in July 2025 in what Gill and the other former employees said was a deliberate attempt by the publisher to avoid paying a performance bonus.

However, a Delaware judge reinstated Gill in March 2026, ruling the termination lacked valid cause and was designed to sabotage the launch schedule.

The court proceedings revealed that Krafton leadership actively sought ways to delay the game and avoid the massive earnout payout.

Court documents even showed the publisher consulting ChatGPT for strategies to remove Gill and the studio founders without triggering legal liabilities.

Krafton originally claimed the studio leadership was neglecting development duties. The judge rejected this defense, granting Gill full operational control over the Early Access launch right before the game shattered sales expectations.

Is Subnautica 2 Early Access Worth Buying Now?

For dedicated fans of the survival genre, the current build offers a highly stable and content-rich starting point.

The record-breaking concurrent player counts reflect a technically sound launch, though early adopters should still expect occasional bugs and unfinished story threads standard to the development process.
