Steam Deck: Valve Adds Display-off Downloads Feature

Valve has finally introduced a highly requested feature to the Steam Deck, three years after its launch, allowing users to download games and updates while the handheld console is in a new display-off, low-power mode.

Steam Deck: Valve Adds Display-off Downloads Feature

This long-awaited quality-of-life feature is now available on Steam Deck in the Beta and Preview channels and is designed to reduce power consumption and screen fatigue.

The new display-off low-power mode will complete all active downloads before automatically placing the console into sleep mode.

How the Low-Power Mode Works

Users can activate the new mode in two ways. Pressing the power button while the Steam Deck is downloading will bring up a new dialog asking if users would like to continue downloading with the console’s screen off. Selecting “Continue” will activate the display-off low-power mode.

The second way is activated when the Steam Deck enters an idle timeout. Pressing a button will reveal the progress of the download, with users able to fully wake the console or let it finish downloading while the screen is off. The console will also automatically go to full sleep when the battery falls below 20%.

Addressing a Key Friction Point: Power and Screen Safety

Since Valve launched the Steam Deck in February 2022, users have been forced to leave their screen on during large game updates and downloads. This method not only wastes power but also raises concerns about the potential burning of the console’s OLED screen.

The new display-off downloads are a major quality-of-life improvement, allowing Steam Deck users to treat it more like a traditional console that features a standby mode. Ultimately, the new feature eases worries about power consumption and provides an important battery safeguard.

Future Availability and Safety

Currently available in the Steam Deck Beta and Preview channels, the low-power mode is expected to roll out to the stable version of SteamOS in the coming weeks.

Valve continues to update the user experience, consistently refining the SteamOS. With the new safety feature, the company is again proving its commitment to making the Steam Deck the best handheld PC on the market.

Steam Deck’s Commitment to Quality-of-Life: The Verdict

Valve has released a new display-off low-power feature for the Steam Deck. This new mode allows users to continue downloading games and content while the screen is off, saving power and reducing the risk of screen burn. What do you think about the new feature? Share your thoughts in the comments.
