Hollow Knight 3: Why a Sequel is Unlikely, Team Cherry Reveals a Worrying Reason
Just finished Silksong and already dreaming of Hollow Knight 3? Team Cherry has unfortunately dampened fans’ hopes. In a recent interview, the creators discuss their future and their desire to explore new worlds.
The wait for Hollow Knight: Silksong, initially a DLC that became a full game, was immense. After seven years, the game was finally released last September. Following this launch, journalist Jason Schreier (Bloomberg) spoke with the studio to discuss the future, including a potential Hollow Knight 3.

Team Cherry wants to “explore other worlds”
When asked three months after Silksong’s release, Team Cherry clarified their future plans. First of all, it should be noted that Hornet’s adventures (the heroine of Silksong) are still set to receive a DLC, the release date of which remains undetermined. But what does the studio plan to do once this content is delivered?
The response from Ari Gibson, co-founder of Team Cherry, is clear: they have “other games in mind.”Gibson insists: “We don’t want to be the people who exclusively work on Hollow Knight.” The studio wants to “explore other worlds.”
The ideal scenario for their next project would therefore be to try something new, which seems to rule out the immediate start of work on a Hollow Knight 3.
The Fear of running out of time
Gibson also shared another concern for the studio’s future, with a touch of dark humor.
“Our biggest worry for the future, and this isn’t a joke, is death,” he said. “It’s not that far off when you spend seven years on a single project.”
Team Cherry wants to continue creating “experiences involving exploring vast worlds and facing giant bosses,” but not necessarily via Hollow Knight 3. Gibson concludes that it would be “interesting to explore the same things that fascinate us, but in a slightly different genre or theme.”
In Conclusion: Still a long way to go for the third entry
Whatever the case, we will have to be very patient. Team Cherry’s next project likely won’t arrive for another four or five years, after the release of Silksong’s future DLC.
