MultiVersus Directors Create Airlock Games, a New Studio Focusing on Smaller Games

Two directors behind the now-canceled Warner Bros. live-service multiplayer brawler, MultiVersus, have formed a new studio, Airlock Games. The developer has already announced its first game, What the Stars Forgot, which enters Early Access later this year.

MultiVersus Directors Create New Studio Focusing on Smaller Games

MultiVersus Production Director Justin Fischer and Technical Director Brock Feldman have announced the creation of Airlock Games. This new studio will focus on making smaller games “as efficiently as possible.”

In a press release, the duo said that after spending years working on AAA titles, they now want to focus on the more “reckless creativity of more focused games.”

Escaping the AAA Complexity

Fischer and Feldman have stressed that Airlock Games will take “creative risks, push boundaries, and tell stories that just aren’t feasible for AAA productions.”

By focusing on smaller games, the studio will avoid the often bureaucratic processes that larger studios must navigate, while also providing refined, unique experiences that interest both the developers and audience.

The First Project: A Sci-Fi Management Horror

Fans don’t have to wait long for Airlock Games’ first title, as the studio has announced What the Stars Forgot, a 16-bit sci-fi, horror-based management sim inspired by Star Trek and The Terror.

Fischer and Feldman are bypassing traditional publishing routes and maintaining full creative control by asking fans to support their debut title on Kickstarter. This campaign will end on November 28, 2025, with the game set to launch in Early Access in late December, before a full release in March 2026.

A Growing Trend of Creative Autonomy

After the disastrous MultiVersus and a year marked by large-scale industry layoffs, the move by Fischer and Feldman follows a broader industry trend where developers and directors are prioritizing creative freedom over the corporate structure.

Airlock Games is the latest studio determined to break into an ever-growing indie space that could potentially dominate the industry in the coming years as larger companies lay off staff and focus on AI-driven content to prioritize profits and speed.

Conclusion

Former MultiVersus directors, Justin Fischer and Brock Feldman, have announced the creation of Airlock Games and their debut title, What the Stars Forgot. The new studio will focus on smaller, unique experiences. What do you think about the industry at the moment? Do you think it needs more indie developers? Share your thoughts in the comments.
