What is The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu?

The Mound: Omen of Cthulhu is a four-player cooperative survival horror game set in a cursed 16th-century South American jungle. Players take on the role of explorers gathering treasures, rescuing survivors, and fighting cosmic horrors inspired by H.P. Lovecraft before losing their sanity.

Developed by ACE Team and published by NACON, the game is gearing up for a major public test. Following a recent closed beta phase, a robust demo will be available during the upcoming Steam Next Fest starting June 15.

The core gameplay loop centers around a safe-haven galleon anchored off the coast. Players must prepare their loadouts on the ship before taking a rowboat to the hostile mainland to execute various contracts.

Expeditions begin on the galleon where players sign contracts and distribute gear before rowing to the mainland. Progression is tied to discovering abandoned forts and recovering logbooks, which permanently unlocks these locations as forward operating bases for future runs.

Before leaving the ship, teams must carefully divide their limited equipment. Available gear includes muskets, crossbows, swords, oil lamps, and crucial reviving salts for fallen comrades.

Contracts dictate the primary goal of each run. Teams will find themselves tasked with extracting legendary treasures, gathering food for the galleon’s crew, or tracking down lost explorers who previously ventured into the canopy.

How Does the Sanity System Affect Players?

The sanity system dynamically distorts a player’s perception by triggering highly individualized visual and auditory hallucinations. As madness increases, players might see the world drenched in blood, encounter traps disguised as mirages, or face corrupted versions of former teammates.

Because these hallucinations are tied to individual players, clear communication is required to survive. The game utilizes spatial audio and requires proximity voice chat to keep the team coordinated.

If a player wanders off and loses vocal contact with the group, the isolation rapidly accelerates their madness. Players who succumb to the jungle’s influence can return as mind-controlled hostile entities actively hunting their former friends.

Managing Stealth and Threat Levels

Surviving the dense environments requires careful audio management and strict trigger discipline. The jungle is highly reactive to player presence, meaning every snapped branch or fired musket risks awakening the horrors lurking nearby.

Players must follow environmental clues and old accounts to eventually locate the titular Mound. Securing the riches within requires a balance of cautious exploration and decisive action when confronted by supernatural threats.
