- The new experimental Adaptive Difficulty dynamically scales enemy health and damage based on player performance.
- Cold Symmetry removed limits on Glimpses and Tarstones, allowing players to fully upgrade and respec Shells in a single run.
- Combat pacing received a major overhaul, widening parry windows and fixing riposte damage scaling for late-game encounters.
Cold Symmetry released a massive update for Mortal Shell 2 on Steam, PlayStation, and Xbox. The patch introduces an experimental adaptive difficulty system, comprehensive economy rebalances, and significant combat improvements.
How Does Adaptive Difficulty Work in Mortal Shell 2?
Adaptive Difficulty in Mortal Shell 2 is an optional system that dynamically adjusts enemy stats based on player performance. If a player defeats enemies without dying, enemy health and damage increase infinitely. Conversely, frequent player deaths reduce enemy stats and apply a damage cap to prevent one-hit kills.
Cold Symmetry detailed this experimental feature in the official Steam patch notes. Players must manually enable the setting through the Game Settings menu.
Night Mode ignores the difficulty reduction. Nocturnal encounters remain challenging regardless of player struggles, though the game will still scale difficulty upwards if the player performs exceptionally well.
Economy Overhaul: Unlimited Glimpses and Tarstones
The development team addressed widespread criticism regarding the frugal in-game economy. Previous limits restricted players from exploring different Shell combinations during a single campaign.
The update introduces Fragile Tarstones and Glimpse Stones. These new items allow players to farm previously finite resources consistently throughout the game world.
The developer also added Mether’s Severance. This respec item refunds all spent Glimpses, giving players the freedom to sever their bond with a Shell and experiment with entirely different character builds.

Combat Upgrades: Parrying and Riposte Scaling
Combat pacing received a structural overhaul, specifically targeting parries and late-game ripostes. The Infinite Seal now grants a wider parry window during the wind-up animation, allowing players to block consecutive hits instead of just the initial strike.
Cold Symmetry fixed riposte scaling for New Game Plus and late-game encounters. Players will notice a significant damage increase and more consistent invulnerability windows during these critical strikes.
Status effects apply differently now. Players can inflict status ailments on enemies while the targets recover from a riposte, opening up new aggressive combat strategies.
Beacon Distribution Dungeon Progression and Optimization
Exploration flow benefits from additional Beacons placed across the Fainweald and Mammon regions. The studio redistributed these save points to eliminate frustrating travel gaps.
Egon’s Stone now alters dungeon progression by returning defeated players to the dungeon entrance rather than a distant Beacon. The item prevents Gloom loss but breaks after a set number of deaths.
The latest patch deploys essential performance tweaks for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, and PC hardware. Volumetric fog density no longer degrades frame rates on lower global illumination settings.
PlayStation 5 players can now use system pop-ups without pausing the active game instance. The developers also resolved collision issues with the Lost Child boss and prevented players from falling through geometry when exiting dungeons.
