Good news for some Xbox users as Microsoft postpones the steep Game Pass Ultimate price jump in specific countries
Microsoft shook Game Pass Ultimate members early this month with the announcement of a 50% increase in monthly subscription. While the added perks were great and the hike won’t take effect to current subscribers until November 4th, many were still quick to cancel their subscription.
But it turns out, good things really do come to those who wait. Well at least for some.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate Price Remains Unchanged in Some Regions
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate was announced to take a price increase of 50% making the monthly fee $29.99/£22.99/€26.99. This took effect on October 1st (the same day it was revealed) for new users, and was scheduled to take effect on November 4th for current subscribers. With less than a month to go, some members received an email from Microsoft saying that the new price will no longer be applied to their subscription. For now.
“At this time, these increases will only affect new purchases and will not affect your current subscription for the market in which you reside, as long as you are on an auto-recurring plan.” Since some felt this was too good to be true and that this was not part of the official announcement, many were skeptical of the email’s authenticity.
This was quickly put to rest as Kari Perez, head of Xbox communications, confirmed with The Verge that the email is genuine. They reported, “Our recent Game Pass update remains unchanged. Current subscribers in certain countries will continue renewing at their existing price for now, in line with local requirements. We’ll provide advance notice before price adjustments take effect in these countries.”
It’s reassuring to see that price regulations in some countries are actively enforced to protect consumers. At the end of the day, especially in this particular case, a contract was made agreeing to the type of service at a particular price for an x amount of time with the option to auto-renew.
As of writing, the email was received by subscribers from Poland, Ireland, Italy, Germany, and South Korea.
