Magic: The Gathering – Secret Lair x Monster Hunter Superdrop Delayed Following Backlash

After announcing its latest Magic: The Gathering Superdrop last week, Wizards of the Coast has apologized to fans for falling short of expectations and has delayed the Secret Lair x Monster Hunter Superdrop until 2026.

Magic: The Gathering - Secret Lair x Monster Hunter Superdrop Delayed Following Backlash

Announced as part of the latest Universes Beyond series, which combines the world of Magic: The Gathering with worlds, characters, and stories of different IPs, the Secret Lair x Monster Hunter Superdrop’s delay follows underwhelming fan reaction to its card selection and faithful integration of Capcom’s IP.

Revealed in a blog post, Wizards of the Coast has apologized to fans, saying it will “postpone this release and rework the Superdrop entirely” from its initial planned December 1 launch to 2026.

The Core of the Backlash: Value and Flavor

Fans of MTG and Monster Hunter were quick to point out that many cards in the Superdrop were financially worthless or unplayable. Many fans also complained that most cards failed to capture Monster Hunter’s unique mechanics.

With iconic monsters bearing little resemblance to their role or attacks in the Monster Hunter games, Wizards admitted it had “missed the mark.”

Wizards of the Coast Responds: A Rare Delay and Apology

Stating it “fell short of expectations,” WotC said that while “pulling Superdrops back isn’t something we’re going to do very often,” the collaboration with Capcom ultimately is “not up to the standard” fans have come to expect.

Many see this delay as a sign that Wizards of the Coast is prioritizing quality over rushing out a product that has received significant criticism. The company itself admits it “can do better,” and says it is “committed to doing better.”

What Fans Expect from the Monster Hunter Superdrop Rework

Wizards of the Coast has told fans that it “will share new details and updated release in a few months.” Meanwhile, fans expect to see card selections with improved financial value and cards that mechanically fit the Monster Hunter IP.

Rather than a bloated Superdrop, padded with uninteresting cards that don’t resonate with its source material, fans hope the delay will mean a more accurate representation worthy of a Magic: The Gathering and Monster Hunter collaboration.

The Monster Hunter Delay: A Commitment to Quality

Wizards of the Coast has announced it is delaying the upcoming Magic: The Gathering Secret Lair x Monster Hunter Superdrop. Admitting that the original card selection “missed the mark” regarding financial value and flavorful integration of Capcom’s iconic IP, WotC is now committed to a complete rework.
