Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 Voice Actor Charlie Cox Says Gustave’s Motion Capture Actor Deserves All the Credit

Charlie Cox, the voice of Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, and nominee for Best Performance at The Game Awards 2025, has refused to take all the credit for recognition, stating that the character’s motion capture actor, Maxence Cazorla, deserves it instead.

Charlie Cox, known for his work in the Marvel Universe and performance as Matt Murdock in Netflix’s Daredevil TV series, has singled out French actor Maxence Cazorla, who provides the motion capture for Gustave in Sandfall Interactive’s Clair Obscur: Expedition 33.

Cox stated that while he is “thrilled” at the nomination for Best Performance at this year’s The Game Awards, that “any credit” must go to Cazorla.

Cox: Why Voice Acting is ‘Just Part of the Process’

While previously admitting that he feels “like a total fraud” for his Gustave performance, after only spending four hours recording lines for the character, Cox has now publicly told fans that his voice “was just a part of that process,” and that Cazorla recorded “almost all of the motion capture.”

Cox’s statement highlights the collaborative effort in creating video games, as roles are often split between voice and mo-cap actors, calling to attention the potential need for dual recognition for award nominations and critical acclaim.

The Unseen Talent: Cazorla’s Multi-Role Mastery in Expedition 33

Cazorla’s contribution to the Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 goes far beyond the motion capture work for Gustave, as the French actor was also responsible for capturing Verso and Renoir, and voicing Esquie in both the English and French versions.

Cox’s focus on recognizing Cazorla serves as a reminder that emotional and story-driven RPGs are built upon the strong performance of unseen physical acting that helps bring the characters and story to life.

The Game Awards Challenge: Recognizing Motion Capture Excellence

The praise for Cazorla from a highly acclaimed Hollywood actor like Cox is enough to begin a conversation within the gaming community that better recognition for the brilliant work of motion capture actors is needed throughout the industry.

Ceremonies like The Game Awards often focus on the incredible voice performance, leaving the actors who provide the physical performance largely uncredited. Cox could be the instigator for that change.

The Future of Performance Credit

Charlie Cox, while “thrilled” to be nominated for Best Performance at The Game Awards 2025 for his performance as Gustave in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, says all credit must go to motion capture actor Maxence Cazorla. While the industry often celebrates the voice performers, many believe that mo-cap actors should now be more recognized for their hard work.
