A massive data dump just shed light on one of gaming’s biggest “what ifs.” Monolith Productions, the studio behind Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor, spent time developing a tie-in to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight. It never hit shelves.
New files recovered from an old hard drive give us a rare look at “Project Apollo.”

The Lost “Dark Knight” Game
Preservationist “MrTalida” recently uploaded nearly a gigabyte of data recovered from deleted sectors of a Monolith Productions hard drive. The files date back to 2009 and 2010.
This wasn’t just a generic brawler. The project, codenamed Apollo, aimed to replicate the gritty tension of the Nolan films. While the game was scrapped before completion, these files prove the studio had ambitious plans for Bruce Wayne.
The leak confirms the game featured a “Nemesis System” prototype long before it defined the Middle-earth series, though the focus here was heavily on atmosphere and audio.
I've recovered a cache of documents and videos from the pre-production phase of Project Apollo, a canceled Batman game Monolith worked on.

Project Apollo: Stealth, Sound, and The Tumbler
The recovered footage highlights a sophisticated “dynamic audio” system. The game adjusted music and ambient sound in real-time based on player actions.
If you were stalking enemies from the shadows, the score would shift. Enter combat, and the intensity ramped up. The demos utilized Hans Zimmer’s original score, ensuring the audio transitions felt cinematic and vertical—shifting from city noise to wind as Batman ascended.
Visuals were equally promising for the era. The leak showcases realistic cape physics and facial animation tests.
Gameplay loops included:
- The Tumbler: Drivable sequences in the iconic tank-like Batmobile.
- Detective Mode: Gathering evidence at crime scenes.
- Combat: A mix of stealth takedowns and brawling.
While the environments appear untextured and rudimentary in these clips, the mechanics show a clear vision that predates the refined systems we later saw in other titles.
Here's a series of videos showing various game mechanics at play, like completing a quest, knocking an enemy out, throwing smoke bombs, basic combat, and AI navigation.

Again, this is very, very early stuff.

The Future of the Bat
While Project Apollo remains a historical footnote, the Caped Crusader isn’t finished. Warner Bros. has confirmed LEGO Batman: The Dark Knight’s Legacy is targeting a 2026 release.
Furthermore, following the struggles of Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, industry insiders suggest Rocksteady may pivot back to its roots. Rumors indicate a new single-player Batman experience could be in early pre-production.
For now, fans of the franchise have plenty of back-catalog gems to revisit while waiting for the next big announcement.
Verdict: Was Project Apollo a Missed Opportunity?
The footage from Project Apollo is rough, but the potential is undeniable. Monolith eventually pivoted to create the stellar Middle-earth titles, likely using tech born from this cancelled project. It’s a fascinating glimpse into development hell, but it ultimately led to innovation elsewhere. With the saddened news of the studio shutdown back in February 2025.
With Rocksteady studios currently working on a new Batman game, what would you like to see them adding to the return of the Dark Knight?
