Mortal Shell: The Virtuous Cycle is a DLC expansion for Mortal Shell it adds a new separate game mode from the main game called the Virtuous Cycle a Roguelike mode it uses the familiar maps from the main game but with some shifting changes, double the number of enemies you will encounter, adds buffs you can find on chests and pillars called instincts these will empower your character in a direction of your choosing, and the staple of Roguelike’s permadeath. The DLC will also add a new playable shell and a weapon, can you escape this harsh and ever-shifting landscape?

• Each time you restart a run in the Virtuous Cycle the map changes shape in both obvious and subtle ways, there are more than 100 different instinct upgrades you can find that enhance your character directly with new passives, maneuvers, or weapon buffs.
• New Mortal Shell: Hadern your elusive teacher joins the ranks of shells you can possess, playable in both the main game and the Virtuous Cycle his unique skill tree allows him to borrow abilities from other shells and combine them together.
• New Weapon: Axatana is a powerful weapon that has two distance stances, assembling the weapon gives you the heavy Axe stance which allows you to perform powerful blows, if you disassemble it, it becomes the double katanas stance which allows you to perform lightning-fast blows instead, you can also unlock unique move sets for both stances.

Although as of this writing it is no longer a free download, The Virtuous Cycle is probably an easy to recommend purchase for fans of the base game. The new roguelike game mode is punishing fun (if that’s your thing) and the new Shell and weapon are a welcome addition to the arsenal. If you bounced off Mortal Shell due to its difficulty, this new DLC won’t change your mind, but it’s good news for most everyone who enjoys Cold Symmetry’s homage to Dark Souls.
