Everything You Should Know About Surviving In Valheim
- What your first steps in the game should be.
- How to build your first base.
- How to prepare for the first big boss fight.
Chop Trees
Dropping into Valheim is a familiar sight as it has many features influenced by other survival games.
After a little scout, the first thing to do is craft the available tools from the wood and stone you can find. An axe and hammer, and plenty of wood and stone will be a great start.
Collect wood by punching trees. Yes, punching. And gather the stone you see by picking it up.
The first task is to craft a workbench. To do this, you need to enter the crafting tab and select the recipe for the workbench.
The workbench allows you to craft tools and build a shelter within the area it covers.
Next, you need to protect your workbench either through the building of a roof or a wall. You will be under constant attack.
The next task is to build a bed and campfire.
The campfire will keep you warm and offer a light source throughout the night, and the bed will be your respawn point if you should die.
If you need to level the terrain to build, you can do this by crafting a hoe.
Be as efficient as possible with the limited resources you have, and you may survive the first night
Level Up Skills By Using Them
The skills in Valheim are similar to other games in the genre. Using them more will raise your experience and level in them, making you more efficient at them.
If you want to improve your archery skill, do some target practice. If you want to level up in fistfighting, use your fists and punch things.
Before you go swinging your weapons wildly to level up, keep in mind that your weapons do have limited durability. Don’t break them too soon.
Good to Know: Repairs Are Free of Charge
On the topic of durability, if you find yourself needing to repair your broken hammer or blunt axe, you can do so by using the workbench.
As long as your workbench is usable, repairing your tools and weapons is free.
Make Sure to Have Plenty of Storage Space
Survival games require careful inventory management, and Valheim is no different.
While building and gathering resources, it would be wise to build chests early on and place them within your base.
Store resources and clean up your inventory regularly using the chests.
Weapons: Bows, Arrows, Shields & Spears
You will want a weapon when exploring the world, and you will need one if you are to survive.
As early as possible, craft a bow. As well as attacking from range, you can use it for hunting the deer.
Crafting arrows with wood is simple, and it should be easy to gather more wood when needed.
Defeat Eikthyr: How to Prepare Yourself Optimally
So, you’re ready for your first boss, Eikthyr.
Eikthyr, the mystical stag, can only be summoned from one place. The Mystical Altar.
You can summon Eikthyr with two deer trophies. They must be in your inventory.
Deer trophies are collected by hunting deer. It is an uncommon drop and can take a little while.
Eikthyr isn’t too powerful, though he does have two forms of lightning attacks. He can attack from range and up close.
You most likely will have a wooden shield and a starting weapon, such as a spear. They will be enough to defeat Eikthyr as long as you block his attacks and chip away with your weapon.
Just bear in mind that it will be worth resting in your bed before battling and restoring any health you are missing.
Co-op Multiplayer & PvP
Up to ten players can be on one server. Together, you can settle, craft, and battle together in online co-op action.
By default, PvP is disabled. You can, however, do battle with one another if you both mutually agree to fight.
How to Host A Game with your friends
If you want to play a game, the easiest way is to host a game on your PC. A decent PC and a stable internet connection are all that’s needed to get started.
Follow these simple steps and get started in moments:
- Create a character
- Select the “Start Game” tab in the main menu
- Click on “New”
- Give your world a name
- Select the “Start Server” option
- Start the game
- Use Shift + Tab to invite your friends via your friends list
- Alternatively, your friends should see your game under the “Join Game” tab
Dedicated Servers For Valheim
A larger group may want to set up a dedicated server, which is a little more complicated.
These steps will help you set up your dedicated server:
- Search your Steam library for the tool “Valheim Dedicated Server” and install it.
- Now create a new world, or copy an existing one to the server. These will be saved in the folder C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\LocalLow\IronGate\Valheim\worlds.
Go to the folder \Steam\apps\common\Valheim Dedicated Server.
- Open the file “start_headless_server” in a text editor.
- Here you have to enter your desired information. Your server name comes after “-name”. Your world name after “-world” and your password after “-password”. After “-public” you can specify with a 0 or 1 whether the server should be publicly visible or not.
- The server name and world name must be different. Your password must not contain your server or world name.
- Save the file and back it up, as it will be deleted after each game update.
- Open the ports TCP/UDP 2456-2458 in your router and firewall.
- Double-click on “start_headless_server” to start the server.
- If your server is not public, players will have to join it via the Steam server browser using the IP.
- The IP address of your server is its external IP followed by :2457.

Great video/written guide – really makes me want to get the game and try it out!
One of my favorite features in Valheim is definitely that PvP is disabled as default – I really hate when you’re just trying to relax and have a good time, and some whale that has spent forever in whichever game comes and kills you, and then proceeds to camp you until you leave the area or go offline 😕
I see this game a lot among the twitch streamers. everyone seems so hyped that i’m willing to try this game!
i don’t love this game, but the game is good! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I absolutely love open-word survival games and this settled in Viking period looks amazing. Sure I will try it in the future. The fact that reapairing tools is free is a pretty nice feature.
got this recently, pretty good for being early access, fun with friends and hopefully much more to come from this game.
