When is Until Dawn 2 Coming Out?
Until Dawn 2 is scheduled to release on the PlayStation 5 in 2027. Sony officially announced the sequel during the June 2026 State of Play presentation. This confirmed the game as a current-generation exclusive. A specific month or day has not yet been provided by the publisher.
Development is being handled by Liverpool-based studio Firesprite. This marks the studio’s first major release since their collaboration on the virtual reality title Horizon Call of the Mountain.
A New Setting: What is the Story of Until Dawn 2?
The narrative of Until Dawn 2 follows a crew of influencers who run a staged ghost-hunting channel called “Dead True.” After securing a major television network deal, the group is sent to Akashina Island to film their first fully funded episode.
Instead of staging jump scares for their audience, the characters encounter genuine supernatural threats and centuries-old vengeance. The standalone story features an entirely new cast of protagonists trapped in the abandoned tropical resort.
Despite the new cast, the sequel does feature one familiar face. Actor Peter Stormare is confirmed to return to the franchise, reprising his role as the enigmatic Dr. Hill.

Gameplay Mechanics and The Butterfly Effect
The core mechanics of the franchise remain intact, operating as an interactive horror film where player decisions dictate the survival of the cast. The classic tagline “Everyone can live. Everyone can die” remains a central pillar of the experience.
Firesprite’s creative director Stu Tilley confirmed on the official PlayStation Blog that the sequel retains the original game’s DNA. The focus remains heavily on character drama, tension, and difficult choices.
The Butterfly Effect system returns with expanded relationship mechanics. How players manage interpersonal dynamics within the ghost-hunting crew will unlock specific narrative branches.
Choices range from managing scandalous workplace affairs to deciding whether to risk injury to save a trapped animal. Both major decisions and small conversational choices will lead to unforeseen consequences.
Until Dawn 2 comes to PS5 next year.

Why is Firesprite Developing Until Dawn 2?
Sony assigned development duties to Firesprite rather than original creator Supermassive Games. While Supermassive had reportedly considered a sequel following the original game’s success in 2015, the project never materialized. This led PlayStation to hand the property to its internal Liverpool-based studio.
Firesprite took over the intellectual property to build a standalone experience from the ground up. The team has stated their commitment to honoring the interactive horror formula that established the franchise’s cult following over a decade ago.
PlayStation has confirmed that further details regarding specific gameplay systems and the full cast roster will be revealed in the months leading up to the 2027 launch window.
