Despite mass layoffs across the company and uncertainty in its gaming division, Amazon has reassured fans that the upcoming Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics is still in active development.

Following what many employees describe as a “gutting” of Amazon’s gaming division, with mass layoffs affecting up to 14,000 roles and resulting in the closure of New World: Aeternum, the company confirms the upcoming Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics is safe.
A company-wide memo seen by Variety and sent to employees by Amazon reveals that while the changes are “significant,” there are still first and third-party titles in active development. While the company does not provide a release window, it does offer assurance for the future of the iconic franchise.

The upcoming Tomb Raider game was announced in 2022 by Crystal Dynamics, who were attending the Epic Games State of Unreal event. In a major shift for the franchise, it was revealed that the game is being developed using Unreal Engine 5, which promises a visually stunning and next-generation experience for players.
While Crystal Dynamics and Amazon Games have not spoken much about the game since, leaks suggest the single-player adventure game will feature an open-world setting, allowing players to better explore and complete the game at their own pace.
Development Ongoing
The gaming industry was left reeling on October 29, when Amazon confirmed up to 14,000 jobs were at risk following mass layoffs across the company.
As part of the layoffs, Amazon announced the closure of its MMO, New World: Aeternum. However, the company has now told its employees in a memo that Tomb Raider and other games are still in development.
In the memo, Amazon’s Vice President, Steve Boom, reveals that the company is “continuing to work” with Crystal Dynamics on an upcoming Tomb Raider title.”
Waiting for the Reveal
With confirmation from Amazon that Crystal Dynamics is continuing its development of Tomb Raider, all that is left is for a reveal.
And many are hoping to see gameplay or a trailer at The Game Awards 2025, which incidentally kicks off on December 11, the same day as the upcoming season two of the Tomb Raider anime on Netflix.
Conclusion
Amazon Games has reassured fans that the Tomb Raider game at Crystal Dynamics is still in active development. The news comes following the mass layoffs of up to 14,000 staff at Amazon, which also saw the shutdown of New World: Aeternum. Are you happy to see Lara Croft return?
