Star Birds (SB) is the new base-building and resource management game from the team at Toukana Interactive. A German indie development team founded in 2020 in Berlin. They debuted in 2021 with Dorfromantik in Early Access. A colorful hex-style strategy and puzzle game that was a huge success with its official launch in 2022.

Officially announcing SB as their second project on March 21, 2025, previously known as Project Mango. In collaboration with the animation studio and storytellers of kurzgesagt. Star Birds: Available Today in Early Access

A little over a year after the official announcement, today finally marks the launch of Star Birds. The new space adventure of base building and resource management from the indie team at Toukana Interactive. A game born from a collaboration with kurzgesagt and available today, September 10, 2025, on Steam in Early Access.

Launch preceded by a Steam Demo that was available until September 8, 2025. Taking us on a colorful space adventure in the company of cute astronaut birds. Traveling through the cosmos on a mission to create a mining operation by building on various asteroids. With discoveries, mysteries, and exploration awaiting us.

Star Birds: Gameplay and Key Features

The second project to debut in Early Access. A colorful adventure with the art style crafted by the kurzgesagt team. And most importantly, with lots of cute birds. Overall, it offers:

• 360° Base Building: With procedurally generated asteroids, each with a unique shape where you can build an efficient mining network. But it’s also full of discoveries and even some easter eggs waiting for us.

• Explore and Experiment: Explore in search of new asteroids to mine precious resources useful for your next mission. Complete with obstacles and artifacts to recover.

• Story, Campaign, and Missions: A mysterious game campaign and story told with the classic kurzgesagt vibe. With clues that will lead us to a great mystery. It’s also packed with collectibles and challenges to complete.

The Steam Demo ended on September 8 with a huge success with over 200,000 downloads. As well as 1,500 reviews with a 95% positive rating. And the team received great enthusiasm but also a lot of feedback including requests for balancing and QoL improvements. The team promises to incorporate the most notable ones into the development of the Early Access. Which is planned, for now, to last at least 1 year.
