Reports indicate that Naughty Dog specifically prioritized The Last of Us Part 1 Remake as it required less modernization than the first Uncharted, and to potentially capitalize on the massive cross-media momentum generated by the successful HBO television adaptation. According to TheKempy, a dataminer, who made an Uncharted 4 documentary, at one point, a Sony-owned developer, Visual Art Support Group, made a small part of an Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune remake “in 2018 or 2019” before it was eventually dropped in favor of TLoU.

Why did Naughty Dog choose The Last of Us over an Uncharted remake?

Despite wanting to remake Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Naughty Dog switched to The Last of Us Part 1 because it was a high-demand flagship title, particularly on the PlayStation 5, and required less modernization than the older Uncharted. TheKempy did say in an interview to Last Stand Media, where this comes from, that some of the Uncharted files ended up in The Last of Us Part 2, in particular the cutscene where “Nate and Elena are going to the island in Sully’s plane, and they get shot down, and they have to parachute out.”

What does this mean for the future?

TheKempy says that while Naughty Dog was considering remaking Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune almost a decade ago, they don’t know if the studio has picked it back up or not. While that may not be the news that fans will want. TheKempy did sugges it could happen, saying that Naughty Dog has “at least tried once in the past, so I could see them trying to do it again.”

The Last of Us Part 1 and Part 2 are incredible single-player games with fantastic stories, characters, and action throughout.
