Stellar Blade 2 will address the first game’s “weak” story, says developer Shift Up, who revealed the Souls-like had to be scaled back due to development costs. Stellar Blade recently surpassed 3 million copies across PS5 and PC since its launch on April 26, 2024.

Shift Up Corporation CEO Kim Hyung-hyung has promised an improved story with Stellar Blade 2 after he admitted in an interview that the first game’s story was “weak.”
Speaking to ThisIsGame and translated by MP1st, Hyung-hyung revealed the sequel is still in “deep R&D” following the game’s recent launch on Steam.
The First Game’s Story Missed the Mark
Stellar Blade recently surpassed 1 million copies sold on PC, which took the total sales past 3 million since its initial launch on PS5 in April 2024. However, despite the action game’s incredible success, many feel the story is its weakest part, something which Kim Hyung-hyung agrees with, saying they “had no choice but to reduce” the story as development costs continued to rise.
Explaining Shift Up’s initial plans, Hyung-hyung said: “In the early stages of development, we planned to include detailed settings such as the reason the main character changes clothes in the story. However, as production progressed, the cost of producing cutscenes became too much.” Ultimately, cutscenes that explained key character narratives were scrapped.
What the CEO Said About Stellar Blade 2
Kim Hyung-hyung wants to address the story issues in Stellar Blade 2, saying the team is more than equipped: “If we are given the opportunity to create the next work, I think we will be able to present it with a sufficiently rich narrative.”
Initially, it seems Shift Up were planning a DLC but turned its attention to a direct sequel following the game’s success. After all the work on the PC version of the Souls-like, Hyung-hyung says the team can’t wait to show “how we can show the vision of the next generation.”
What Fans Can Expect Next
Stellar Blade 2 is confirmed to be in development, with Kim Hyung-hyung declaring it in the “R&D” stages. Early hope is that the game will launch by the end of 2027. Hyung-hyung says it 2027 may be too early but that the team will make a “great game.”
