Steam Deck – Everything We Know So Far
Valve announces the Steam Deck, a new portable handheld gaming device expected to launch in December, 2021.
WHAT IS THE STEAM DECK?
The Steam Deck is Valve’s newly announced portable PC capable of running your Steam library of games at 1280 x 800 resolution and 60 FPS.
The console has a bigger screen than a Nintendo Switch and runs on next-generation AMD hardware.
The battery life lasts between 2-8 hours depending on the game you’re playing and at what quality, with the developers stating that you can play Portal 2 at 30 FPS on for around 4-5 hours.
Just as with the Nintendo Switch, you can dock the Steam Deck and connect it to a monitor or TV. The dock is sold separately, and so far, no release date is known.
STEAM DECK SPECIFICATIONS
With any new console, the biggest questions are how it compares to what’s already out there, and although it doesn’t quite hit the level of an Xbox Series X or PlayStation 5, it still packs a punch.

The Steam Deck runs the latest SteamOS, and Valve says that you can download other apps and software on it and treat the console like a regular PC.
It means that you can download other store platforms and play games from other libraries such as EPIC, Xbox, GoG, EA, and Ubisoft.
HOW MUCH IS THE STEAM DECK?
The Steam Deck is available in three versions, with the price you’re willing to spend deciding the hard drive size.
- 64GB eMMC – $399 / £349
- 256GB NVMe SSD – $529 / £459
- 512GB NVMe SSD – $649 / £569
You are essentially paying for storage space the more you are willing to spend.
WHEN CAN I BUY A STEAM DECK?
You can reserve your Steam Deck now for $5 / £4, with the final balance paid once your console is shipped.
For anyone that reserves the console now, orders will complete in September 2022.
It’s important to note, too, that once you reserve your Steam Deck, you can only purchase the size you reserved. You can not change your mind and choose a more or less expensive one.
