Starbreeze Pulls The Plug On Payday 3 Offline Mode Development

Payday 3’s offline mode has been scrapped as Starbreeze calls it “not feasible” for the studio’s future plans for the heist shooter.

Payday 3 recently celebrated its 2nd year anniversary with a Twitch stream which many fans tuned into hoping for a surprise. Indeed a surprise was there but not to anyone’s liking. The game’s most requested feature, Offline Mode, will no longer see the light of day.

 

Payday 3 Offline Mode Cancelled

Starbreeze Entertainment has found itself in the headlines again. Just recently, the studio cancelled Project Baxter, its Dungeons & Dragons co-op title. This resulted in layoffs, and those who remained were redirected to Payday’s team. Clearly, the studio is all hands on deck for its flagship franchise.

As one would expect, a bigger team may help to speed things up with the release of the most requested feature, an offline mode. Afterall, they did announce it over a year ago.

   

Unfortunately it’s not the case. During the anniversary stream, General manager Jonas Skantz states, “So offline mode. Let’s talk about that. I know that the team had good intentions with that, definitely. And they have been trying to make it happen, but I think we have to face the reality that it is not feasible for where we are going with the game.” He further explains that their main focus are features like progression and core loops.

While the biggest issue for Payday 3 is actually the lack of content and not offline mode, it seems sensible to focus on that first. But it didn’t make much sense that the most requested feature (and that it’s already in development) was outright cancelled.

As for the direction they want to take (which resulted in offline mode being scrapped), Payday 2’s recent updates may be an indication. After the whole price hike fiasco which the gamers won in the end, a subscription model for the DLCs were introduced. Although the studio made it clear that this was only an option, it could very well be the stepping stone to a full subscription-based gaming for Payday 3’s future DLCs. And that it could also be the reason why an offline mode is no longer in the cards.
