Housemarque Changes the Rules of Saros With 50 New Difficulty Modifiers in the Zenith Update
Key Takeaways
  • Housemarque released the free Zenith update for the PlayStation 5 exclusive Saros on October 19, 2026.
  • The update adds the Eclipse Layers New Game Plus mode, introducing a scaling difficulty system tied to 50 Carcosan Modifiers.
  • Players gain access to the Overlord Rush mode, which features timed boss gauntlets and global weapon-specific leaderboards.

Housemarque Expands the Action with Zenith

Housemarque continues to support the PlayStation 5 shooter Saros with the release of the massive Zenith update. This free content drop focuses on extending replayability for veteran players while introducing comprehensive accessibility tools to assist newcomers in mastering the complex combat systems.

Abebe Tinari, the Zenith Design Lead, detailed the additions on the official PlayStation Blog, emphasizing the balance between approachable gameplay and high-tier challenges. The update requires no additional purchase and integrates directly into the base game experience.

What is the Eclipse Layers New Game Plus Mode?

The Eclipse Layers mode acts as the official New Game Plus for Saros, accessible via the Armor Matrix after completing the main campaign. Players advance through increasingly difficult versions of the game by equipping a mandatory threshold of Trial Modifiers before beginning their run.

Housemarque expanded the modifier system to include 50 Carcosan Modifiers, split equally between defensive protections and offensive trials. The Hostile Regeneration modifier forces players to finish large enemies with melee strikes, while the Corruption Melee Enhancement converts accumulated armor damage into powerful close-quarters attacks.

Successfully navigating these layers alters the appearance of the protagonist, Arjun. The character equips a golden crown that grows in size based on the difficulty of the active modifiers. This crown unlocks access to 12 hidden collectible Visions scattered throughout the environments.

Overlord Rush and Enhanced Accessibility

The Zenith update introduces the Overlord Rush mode, accessible through the Primary Unit in the Passage hub. This boss rush simulator challenges players to defeat campaign bosses in rapid succession.

The mode features three distinct tiers. The Incursion and Ascension sets require players to defeat three Overlords in approximately 10 minutes. The Totality set demands endurance, forcing players to battle all eight Overlords consecutively. Global leaderboards track performance, allowing players to filter rankings by their chosen main weapon.

To support a broader audience, Housemarque implemented new mechanical assists. The Slow Game Speed function reduces combat pacing without altering enemy attack patterns or removing projectiles. The studio also added an Auto-fire option and support for Motion Sensor Aiming via the DualSense controller.

Zenith Update Strengthens Long-Term Replayability

The Zenith update represents a measured approach to post-launch support for a niche action title. By addressing both the high-skill ceiling desired by returning players and the barriers to entry faced by new users, Housemarque solidifies the mechanical foundation of Saros.

The inclusion of leaderboards and scaling difficulty modifiers provides substantial reasons for the player base to return to Carcosa. The update focuses strictly on refining and expanding the core gameplay loop without compromising the original vision of the development team.
