Vanillaware and Marvelous are bringing one of their most celebrated action RPGs to modern platforms with sweeping gameplay enhancements. The upcoming release modernizes a beloved classic while breaking new ground for the studio on PC hardware.
Why Did Marvelous Bring Muramasa to PC?
Marvelous initiated the PC port to reach the widest possible global audience. Producer Makoto Shioda confirmed that the publisher proposed the PC version to Vanillaware early in development to ensure the revamped action RPG becomes highly accessible to modern players across new ecosystems.
The transition introduced complex technical challenges for the studio. Vanillaware development director Wataru Nakanishi explained that the team had to adapt their proprietary engine to accommodate unfamiliar input methods. The studio iteratively tested and refined the keyboard and mouse controls to guarantee responsive combat.
Despite the hardware leap, the game operates on the original source code used for the Wii and PlayStation Vita releases. Nakanishi described the legacy engine as a preserved core that allowed the team to maintain the signature physics and visual pacing of the original release.
How Does Revenant Blades Change Combat and Progression?
Vanillaware overhauled the combat by detaching Secret Arts from specific blades, allowing players to customize their loadouts freely. Players can equip up to three Secret Arts for both ground and aerial combat, eliminating late-game weapon restrictions and expanding tactical flexibility immediately.
The revised progression structure also removes sequential narrative locks. Players can select any of the six protagonists right from the start, as the stories function completely standalone. The development team unified the progression systems across the base game and the expansion characters.
In a recent interview with InvenGlobal, Nakanishi noted that the original system left many late-game abilities unused. Players seeking the authentic 2009 mechanical constraints can activate “Classic Mode,” which preserves the original fixed-blade gameplay mechanics entirely untouched.
Marvelous and Vanillaware announced "Muramasa: Revenant Blades," a modernized update of the 2009 action RPG. The title launches globally on February 4, 2027, for Steam, PS5, and Nintendo Switch 1 and 2, featuring revised combat systems and all four Genroku Legends DLC stories. https://t.co/VbdFhsNjXu

Preserving the Hand-Drawn Genroku Art Style
Vanillaware manually retouched every texture to elevate the resolution without compromising the distinct 2D aesthetic. The visual fidelity matches modern standards, supported by a strict 60 FPS performance target to accommodate the high-speed action.
According to a detailed report by Automaton Media, the studio also implemented new “Memories” and “Scripts” gallery features. These additions allow players to review the newly localized event scenes and study the intricate Japanese folklore at their own pace.
Marvelous executed a completely new English localization for the release. The publisher worked closely with Vanillaware to ensure the complex cultural references and archaic terminology of the Genroku period translate accurately for global audiences.
