Tactical RPG Mewgenics launches on PS5, Xbox Series, and Switch 2 with Steam cross-save, but console editions face a noticeable price markup.
- Mewgenics launched digitally on September 9 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, with physical editions slated for Q1 2027.
- Console releases include full cross-save progression linked with Steam Cloud and retain all original PC content with zero censorship.
- Higher digital pricing on consoles compared to Steam was set by publisher Nicalis, potentially due to platform-specific launch costs.
The wait is over for console players who have been eager to get their hands on Edmund McMillen and Tyler Glaiel’s latest masterpiece. After months of waiting since its acclaimed PC release, the ultimate cat-breeding tactical RPG has officially made the jump to consoles. Fans can finally experience the chaotic, gene-splicing action from the comfort of their living rooms.
Mewgenics Is Now Available on Consoles
Mewgenics, one of the breakout hits this year, has finally arrived on console. Today, September 9, the game is available digitally on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
The game supports cross-save progression so players who already have a Steam save can transfer their progress to and from Steam Cloud. That makes the transition between PC and console considerably easier, especially for players who have already put plenty of time into building their team of cats.
Physical editions for Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5 have also been confirmed and are currently in production. Those versions are scheduled to launch in Q1 2027. And for anyone wondering about censorship, there is no censorship whatsoever across the different versions of Mewgenics. The console releases retain the same content as the PC version.
One of the biggest chatters around the console release is the pricing. The difference between Steam price and the console’s is substantially big, especially when it comes to the PS5 version since Sony doesn’t do regional pricing.
In an AMA thread on the Nintendo Switch subreddit, developer Edmund McMillen explained that the console pricing was a decision made by publisher Nicalis, the same publisher he previously worked with on The Binding of Isaac. McMillen speculated that the pricing “could be tied to pushed next gen console pricing or physical launch plans,” although he did not confirm that as the reason.
Mewgenics is a turn-based tactical roguelike that revolves around hoarding, breeding, and mutating a team of cats to send out on epic grid-based adventures. Players must carefully balance the genetic traits and RPG classes of their feline warriors, as each cat can only embark on a single run before retiring to the house hub to breed the next generation. The gameplay loop blends deep strategic combat against hundreds of distinct enemies and bosses with a massive sandbox of over 1,000 abilities and items. Ultimately, the goal is to continuously breed a stronger lineage of cats to venture further from home and face progressively deadlier threats.
